Not quite. The libraries went from their sources (hpcalc, etc) to a folder on my PC, to the SD card, to the calculators. Dave Arnett (HP hardware engineer) explains: [r->] [OFF] === Subject: Re: HP-48GX Coma mode > \Coma\ mode was designed to keep batteries fresh even if many months > elapsed between factory packaging and consumer purchase; to this end, > even the clock is stopped Of course, that makes sense. If the CPU clock is stopped it's reasonable to assume that the real-time clock is also stopped. I don't use the HP-48 as an alarm clock (I have a cellphone that does that very well), never really need to do calculations that need to know the time \now\, and never even have the time and date displayed on-screen. \ Re-drawing the screen every second must drain the batteries, and they need a helping hand to get as much out of them as possible! Useful newsgroup this. The ultimate \saving\ in battery life between everyday use with normal \OFF\ (only internal clock & alarms, if any) vs. using ON+SPC in place of OFF (total coma, like Romeo :) may hardly prove worth the bother, unless the idea is that we tend to use the calculator only once every month or more, perhaps, and sometimes may even forget about it for years, as I do -- in which case, remove the batteries completely as well, or you may one day find the calculator ruined by corrosive effluent from batteries which died in their sleep. [r->] [OFF] === Subject: Re: HP-48GX Coma mode > The \warmstart\ that always occurs upon wake-up from \coma\ mode > can also take a bit of time, depending on how many libraries > are installed, how many plugged-in ports, etc. There are no libraries or plugged-in ports on this machine so a warm-start takes roughly 2-3 seconds. I'd consider the trade-off more in favour of \ deep sleep if it took much more than that to come round from a coma. And yes, whenever I know I'm not going to use a device for any extended period of time, I remove the batteries. -- g.stewart(removethis)@(andthis)horwits.co.uk Horwich IT Services === Subject: Re: HP-48GX Coma mode IIRC in COMA mode the clock doesn't run, so if you use your HP as alarm clock, you shouldn't use COMA mode. Turn it off using a program containing an OFF command; the program then continues after turning back on. To assure that the same will occur, in 49/50 series, even if the calc turns itself off after a time limit, and even if turned off via the keyboard OFF function, store that program in a 'STARTOFF' variable, and keep the calculator in USER mode, after assigning 'STARTOFF' to the OFF key function. Example in this thread: [r->] [OFF] === Subject: Re: Program on ON posting-account=gc5kvQoAAABztoqWhjNAKB5GLJ6hpqoh InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 2.0.50727),gzip(gfe),gzip(gfe) few classmates of mine ask me to show my calculator. Is it being programmed in a similar way? The HP-48 will have loads of hardware checks built into its ROM. Checking the battery level could be part of the startup process or, more likely, the hardware asserts an interrupt as soon as the batteries are \ found to be weak (no need to replicate code that way). The \ crown however is a bit hard to operate, hard to grip, and the feel of it \ rotating isn't positive. Or is it a tool? \ Or is it a hatched? Machete? Be careful though, this thing is sharp everywhere. When it is out of its \ sheath, no matter where you touch it, it can cut. I love it. One small gripe is that the unit I received has a hardened glass breaker (?) \ point poking out of the butt. I was told it was a \ \KIT\! Now to me a kit includes the 2 batteries, the charger, and a case! \ That was not the case in this matter. The only thing I received was a drill \ w/out a battery one, a charger, nothing. And to top it all off-I waited, and \ waited, and waited, and finally-after contacting the seller, and getting no \ response , did it finally show up. I left a message explaining my lack of \ satisfaction, w/ the hope of a reply telling me there was a mistake, and how \ they were going to make up for it by....... How about a reply of any sort? \ Nothing!! So, needless to say, I was- and still am, very unhappy w/ the \ seller! But the drill, works fine. Luckily I have an impact driver that is of \ the same brand, and voltage.( gotta have batteries right?) This is a wonderful drill especially picked up for under $100 now that it's \ a older model. The only issue I have is the chuck will not hold bits real \ tight unless you dial the clutch up so high where you would be doing nothing \ but drilling holes. Most all other drills I own or have used will hold bits \ tight without as much effort even at low clutch settings. I would have gave \ it 5 stars with a better chuck. Dialing the clutch up and down just to make a \ good bit change is a added hassle. Don't buy this drill its a waste of money. The chuck slips bad, lacks power, \ and is just plain irritating. It will piss you off to work with it. I've owned this drill for a while now and I can honestly say I'm not \ impressed for a couple of very important (to me) reasons. 1: The run time and capability of the lithium ion batteries has totally \ underwhelmed me. This is my first lithium ion powered tool and until the \ technology is improved and the prices come down, it may well be my last. On \ the bright side, the shorter recharge time the lithium batteries require is a \ bonus. This is especially true if you use your drill hard, like I do \ sometimes, as the battery will get rotated to the charger quite often. \ Fortunately, my 18 volt Hitachi ni-cads will also fit this drill and I find \ myself reaching for those even though they do add significant weight. 2: This drill sports the worst keyless chuck I've used. Seems like I'm \ continually re-tightening the dang thing because it's slipping. There ARE two things about this drill that I like compared to my old one. \ 1: Hitachi has finally added a bit holder. 2: The built in belt hook is very \ nice when working from a ladder. For the record --- I own several Hitachi tools, including a SCMS, another \ 18 volt drill, and an 18 volt circular saw. Overall I've been happy with \ their products. Not this time. I have had a Panasonic MiMH 12V drill for several years. I wanted another \ cordless drill and thought this Hitachi 18V Lithium Ion would be a nice step \ up. Not true. Even after several years, the Panasonic charge lasts longer \ and the drill has more power for difficult tasks. I'm not only disappointed \ with the battery. The chuck is also a step down from the one on my \ Panasonic. I have to make a special effort to get the Hitachi chuck tight \ enough to hold without slipping. I with I had got another Panasonic. The DS18DFL utilizes Lithium Ion technology which helps it to be lighter and \ more compact only weighing 3.7 lbs. The entire bottle of lube had \ leaked out into the package before it got here. It's not worth $20 for a \ cheap sponge/stick. I just recently purchased a treadmill for the first time, and it was \ recommended to me that I wax it every 3 months, not the every 6 months \ indicated in the manual since I run on it alot. I ordered this wax kit and it received it pretty quickly without any \ complaints. The instructions were pretty simple to follow, and the actual application of \ the wax on the \wand\ and then on the treadmill, in thoery, were fairly \ simple as well. I only gave the product 3 stars for the following reasons: 1. the lube is quite runny and it did drip on things as I maneuvered it \ onder the treadmill belt. 2. the applicator wand is NOT designed for wide treadmill decks (I believe \ mine is 22\ wide) so it was VERY hard to move the stick up and down the deck \ because my belt was just slightly wider than the stick. Now only was it \ difficult to move, the edge of the belt tore my fingers up in the process. In the end, the lube does do it's job, it's just not super easy getting it \ there if you've got a wide deck. The product works well though the bottle of lube had leaked in the \ packaging. 1st time treadmill owner, i didn't know what mntc to do so i bought this \ product. really easy to use and no mess. Exactly. However, your screen is already displaying that image, so nothing happens. The current content of that image was mostly generated by a previous invocation of SysDisplay, when there was nothing else for the \system outer loop\ to do, plus any more recent immediate operations (e.g. user DISP commands). A \do nothing\ program for 48G/49G/50G (requires HP Equation Library): \\<< 2 21 1 SOLVEQN 4444 3333 2222 1111 1 5 START 1 WAIT { #0 #0 } PVIEW 1 WAIT TEXT NEXT \\>> Note that the numbers put on the stack are not displayed, and the menu area doesn't show the equation variables, until after the program terminates, whereupon SysDisplay is automatically invoked by the \system outer loop,\ before waiting for the next keyboard input; the equation at the top of the screen, however, is written immediately by SOLVEQN, before the program begins its START...NEXT loop. Going back into history (only three years back, though it seems like a century :) for this example: ROM version 2.01 had a particular bug, such that storing/copying the first object in HOME to port 2 (flash) would always corrupt port 2, producing \Invalid card data\ upon warmstart. PINIT would \fix\ the corruption in its usual manner -- by making everything in an entire bank disappear :) Here is the [long] saga of that bug (which was eventually fixed), with Joe Horn identifying it precisely, and JYA rounding up a suspect: \Okay, I've been able to reproduce it... and I know where it comes from... Will tell the person responsible...\ So yes, PINIT does what it always has, even if only rarely needed. In HP48G, PINIT merely stored and then purged some small object, in every writeable port (which a user had to do for himself in HP48S, but fortunately there were not so many ports then available :) I don't know whether there's more to it in HP49/50. No, I think it is using commutativity. When you reverse the arguments with the noncommutative operations - and *, you get the effect of reversing the operands. However when I attempt to copy > FOo to the card I get an error message: > > 3: FOo > > Already Exists > Overwrite ? > > Why is this happening? The SD card is an external disk, compatible with Windows. In Windows, all files whose names would be the same, were \case\ to be ignored, are duplicates. The Filer (or ARM software) evidently takes this into account, assuming that the SD card is just like a Windows disk (which it is, whenever you use it in an SD reader in a Windows computer). A similar issue came up when I once made the dreadful mistake of trying to back up some Unix folders to a Windows computer, using \GoodSync\ software. Even though I had defined my job as \one way\ (supposedly not affecting the \source\), GoodSync decided to delete any SOURCE files which could not be copied (due to unique case-sensitive names on Unix side which caused \collisions\ on Windows side), and it took me a long time to recover from the resulting mess. Other than that one horrible bug, GoodSync (commercial software) is amazingly good. Similar issues would occur using FTP, if only one side permits case-sensitive names and the other does not. I've got a CST menu with the four number bases in it. Pressing the associated menu key switches the active number base, and pressing them after Left-Shift acts kind of like the \Show\ function on the 16c, displaying the value of stack level one in the top row of the screen using the selected number base, without changing the current operating number base. Right now it just saves the current number base (flags -11 and -12), switches to the desired base, does DUP 1 DISP 1 FREEZE, and restores the original number base. I'd like to modify this so that it displays all the stack levels using the temporary number base, but I need to find a way to force the stack display to update during program execution, then call 2 FREEZE, and restore the original settings of flags -11 and -12. I'd be fine with using supported SYSEVAL entry points if that's what it takes to display the current stack while the program is running. -Dave Britten === Subject: Re: Update stack display during program execution? > I need to find a way to force the stack display > to update during program execution Use supported entry point name: SysDisplay #386A1h on original HP48[S/G][X/+] #2EF67h on HP49/50/48gii series. @ Any HP48/49/50: \\<< RCLF SIZE 3 > #2EF67h #386A1h IFTE SYSEVAL \\>> 'SDISP' STO Backup memory (ARCHIVE) before using SYSEVAL, just in case. I replaced it with a \refurbished\ one from eBay. I'm not sure how you refurbish something with no replaceable parts, but it appears to be brand new. It wasn't in a blister pack, so maybe they bought up all the leftovers when the HP50G came out. ON+D says that the OS is v2.09 4.01 Build 92. That's exactly what the old one said. But there are tiny differences. For one thing, the garbage collection seems to be much shorter and to take place after a DROP or a NXT (always at the stack, never in a program). The CHOOSE box doesn't lock up for 30 seconds as the old one did. And even more obscure: in the Multiple Equation Solver, the title used to flash for only a nanosecond - now it stays put without the necessity for FREEZE. Do they make small changes like that without changing the build numbers? In any case, I'm really pleased at finding more and more small fixes. As for the hardware, it's too soon to tell. Remind me in three years. :-) Bill === Subject: Re: Undocumented OS Changes? > in the Multiple Equation Solver, > the title used to flash for only a nanosecond - > now it stays put without the necessity for FREEZE. See what happens after 0 \\->HEADER Are all the flags (and modes) exactly the same? Are the same programs installed? (any CHOOSE replacements, before or now?) I know this is an ancient thread but I've only just arrived in this newsgroup after digging out my HP-48GX that had been collecting dust for a certain number of years and which I've recently decided to start using \ again. Point being, I had a similar problem with the backspace, \ Ö, \[Times], - and + keys. More precisely, the RCLF command on my HP50g gives: { # 38800386840103F0h # 0h # 1000004A004011h # 0h } To reproduce the bug, enter a fraction with large numerator; for example, type 10^22/3. Open up the Filer (Left-Shift APPS), and work your way down to the file on your SD card. Hit NXT a couple times until you find EDITB in the menu, and use that. It'll warn you that changes won't be saved - which is okay in this scenario - and then bring you to the editor. Hit NXT, and use the SEARCH tools. -Dave Britten === Subject: Re: Conn4x Driver Question for Mr. Graves > Are there any plans to add support for a Vista/Windows 7 USB driver? But why does the 50g not display the intersection point completely? Although it displayed the circumference of both circles but it showed nothing right at the intersection point. The data I chose is as follows: 1st circle with equation as : (X^2)+(Y^2)-(4) i.e., the centre at (0,0) and radius of 2. 2nd circle with equation as: (X-2)^(2)+(Y-2)^(2)-(4) i.e., the centre at (2,2) and radius of 2. The settings were: Type: Conic No axes, radian mode, both equations at the same time and points connected. I'm not sure what you're asking. Do you mean the gaps that appear in the circles? That's typical of conic plots at the default resolution, which isn't much. You can close the gaps by going to LS+WIN and setting the Step value to .05. Note that this increased resolution will slow the drawing down considerably. For example, the convolution of a Gaussian with itself, one can write it like this: '\\.S(-3;3;EXP(-Y^2)*EXP(-(X-Y)^2);Y)' and plot it through SYMB->GRAPH->PLOT->ERASE and then DRAW. I found this example on http://www.caffnib.co.uk/calculators/calculators.html. 1) With the official ROM C-2.09, my HP 50g takes about 15 minutes to plot the integral convolution; it's too slow! Is there a faster way? While with the new official ROM C-2.15, my HP 50g gets the following message, when I try to plot the graph as before: \Error: Bad Argument Type\. But if I write the integral convolution through the PLOT-FUNCTION window [LS] + [F1]: Y1(X)='\\.S(-3;3;EXP(-Y^2)*EXP(-(X-Y)^2);Y)' then my HP 50g manages to plot the integral convolution! It's a bit strange... Is it a bug? 2) When I try to plot the absolute value (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Absolute_value) of certain functions only valid for x> 0, I get a graph with a branch also for x<0, both ROM C-2.15 and C-2.09. Not exactly -- it is hard to detect while remaining in ALG mode, but the result is actually a program, as may be seen by changing back to RPN mode and entering a TYPE command, resulting in 8 (program). The reason for this may soon become apparent. > But in RPN mode the result is an \invalid syntax\ > error with UTPC highlighted. With RPN one must enter `'Y=UTPC(10,X)'` > to be successful. I don't understand why the back-tics save the day. Anything between back-quotes is evaluated the same as if entered in ALGebraic mode, including the fact that evaluation is immediate, and the result is also always exactly one stack object, which may be NOVAL or a { list of several objects } if it turns out that either no output or more than one output would otherwise have been produced. ALGebraic mode permits any commands (and their arguments) to be evaluated; e.g. `SWAP(2,3)` (entered in RPN mode using back-quotes) produces the final single object { 3 2 } In RPN mode, however, an 'expression' may not contain any commands, e.g. 'SWAP(2,3)' is invalid, because SWAP is a command, not a function. UTPC is also a command, e.g. both { SWAP } 1 GET TYPE and { UTPC } 1 GET TYPE result in type 19 (command), whereas { COS } 1 GET TYPE, for example, results in type 18 (function). Therefore, 'UTPC(10,X)' is just as invalid as 'SWAP(10,X)', whereas it is valid to write formulas containing 'COS(X)' However, since `UTPC(10,X)` (with back-quotes) is evaluated in ALGebraic mode, it can apply the command UTPC to arguments 10 and X, just as `SWAP(10,X)` could apply the command SWAP to arguments 10 and X [r->] [OFF] === Subject: =?ISO-8859-1?Q?Re=3A_Nuevo_foro_de_calculadoras_HP_en_espa=F1ol?= posting-account=DjP4AgoAAACXNvPye9362Yf7xRcnXipQ Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0,gzip(gfe),gzip(gfe) The URL of the best forum in spanish of HP calculators are changed. The arguments are similar to those of MSLV, except that now you can choose the error you want for your solution. LEVEL 4: Vector containing the equations LEVEL 3: Vector containing the variables LEVEL 2: Vector with initial approximations approximations LEVEL 1: Error relative real number. Values can usually be 1E-5, 1E-10 or 1E-12 In the kit also includes two examples: EJ4 System with 4 equations. With respect to the MSLV time is reduced from 1 minute to 6 seconds. EJ11 System with 11 equations. With respect to the MSLV time is reduced from 9 minutes to 40 seconds. ------------------------------------------------- Limiting the program: Works only for equations whose solutions are real numbers. I haven't really seen much out there regarding the Riemann Zeta on the HP49g+/50g so decided to throw this post out for those who might find it useful. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome. I have four functions here; three are for integer arguments for the reciprocal power and varied limits of summation. The fourth is a function for real-valued reciprocal powers. I don't recall the source of the algorithm for this last but I suspect Abramowits & Stegun. RZETA is the Riemann Zeta Function for integer powers and is equvalent to the operation: Sum[ 1 / N^P, for N=1 to infinity ] where P is a positive integer greater than one. To use RZETA, put P (positive integer) on the stack and execute RZETA. Execution time is approx 0.25s The code for RZETA is as follows: RZETA \\<< -1 OVER ^ SWAP 1 - 1 OVER PSI SWAP ! / * EVAL \\>> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Hurwitz Zeta Function is just the Riemann Zeta function with the summation going from some integer to infinity rather than just from one to infinity as in the Riemann Zeta function. HZETA is equvalent to the operation: Sum[ 1 / N^P, for N=A to infinity ] where P is a positive integer greater than one, and A is a positive integer. To use HZETA, put A (a positive integer) on the stack, then put P (positive integer greater than one) on the stack and execute HZETA. Execution time is approx 0.25s The code for HZETA is as follows: HZETA \\<< -1 OVER ^ UNROT 1 - DUP ! UNROT PSI SWAP / * EVAL \\>> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The WZETA function is what I call the Window Zeta function, where the limits of summation are both integer values. WZETA is equvalent to the operation: Sum[ 1 / N^P, for N=A to B ] where P is a positive integer greater than one, A is a positive integer greater than or equal to one, and B is a positive integer greater than one and greater than A. To use WZETA, put A (a positive integer) on the stack, then put B (a positive integer) on the stack, then put P (positive integer greater than one) on the stack and execute WZETA. Execution time is approx 0.85s The code for HZETA is as follows: WZETA \\<< 1 - UNROT 1 + 3 PICK PSI SWAP 3 PICK PSI - OVER ! / -1 ROT ^ * EVAL \\>> - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - DZETA is for real-valued integer powers and is equivalent to the operation: Sum[ 1 / N^R, for N=1 to infinity ] where R is a real positive number (not necessarily an integer but greater than one). To use DZETA, put a real number R on the stack and execute DZETA. The code for DZETA is as follows, and this particular function has not really been optimized in any way, so any suggestions are welcomed: DZETA \\<< { 65536. -65536. 65536. -65536. 65536. -65536. 65536. -65536. 65536. -65536. 65536. -65536. 65536. -65536. 65536. -65536. 65535. -65519. 65399. -64839. 63019. -58651. 50643. -39203. 26333. -14893. 6885. -2517. 697. -137. 17. -1. } 0. 0. \\-> Z ZF N Y \\<< IF Z 0 == THEN 1 2 / NEG EVAL KILL END IF Z 0 > Z 1 MOD 0 == AND THEN I 1 \\oo I Z ^ INV \\GS EVAL KILL END IF Z 0 < Z 1 MOD 0 == AND THEN Z ABS 1 + DUP IBERNOULLI NEG SWAP / SIMPLIFY KILL END Z 'N' STO IF Z 0. < THEN N ABS 1. + 'N' STO END IF N 14. > THEN 'J' 1. 10. One problem with many of these timers/stopwatches is that you can't do anything else on the calculator while timing. When you say that the execution time is 0.85s I think that it is for small or odd integers. Compute zeta(60) or any large even integers needs more times (I try). I'm currently using Windows 7 RC x64 and tried to connect it via their XP Mode virtual environment. Unfortunately it didn't work. I was hopeful that it would but couldn't get it to connect. It installed the driver successfully under XP Mode, but when I would go to connect via the software it couldn't find it (dialog popup), and then if I tried again it would search endlessly to no avail. I would have to Ctrl-Alt-Del to kill the program. I'm sure this has to do with the virtual environment and not the software. Thanx Another way of setting the resolution (number of pixels that are plotted) is the RES command from the stack. This is from my HLP49 help file (hpcalc.org): RES --- Sets plot resolution; default in LS+2D/3D Step is 0, which is a point every two pixels. Can use either binary hex integers or reals - the table below gives the number of plotted points. n -> OR # n -> BINARY REAL POINTS # 4h .4 every 4th pixel # 3h .3 3rd # 2h .2 2nd # 1h .1 every pixel # 0h .4 4th # 2h 0. 2nd Note that #2h and 0 are the same thing - #2h speeds up the HP48, with its default of one point per pixel, but has no effect on the HP49. #3h or .3 give better speed without too much loss of image quality. .05 or smaller can be used to close gaps in certain plots (but it will be much slower). Thanx > > Gurveer The narrower the step value, the more pixels per inch are actually plotted. for wider step values, fewer are actually plotted, and the graph merely connects the plotted dots. If you do 92 MENU you can see the CNCT indicator. If you turn it off and use a larger step value in a graph, you will see only the points actually calculated with gaps in between. Turn on the CNCT indicator and graph again and the gaps will all be filled by short straight line segments. The connect status can also be changed using left-shift_and_hold F4. === Subject: Re: Conn4x with 48G and 48GX: \Conneciton Error. There are some issues with simplification, that I'd like to understand. 1. Trigonometric functions in series. When I try to calculate sum of sines or cosines, the calculator makes calculation in approximation mode even when exact mode is selected. For example, if I enter ª(n=0,5,(n-1)*x) the result is 9*x But if (without changing any preferences) I enter ª(n=0,5,SIN((n-1)*(\[Eth]/4)) the result is 1.70710678119 which is numerical result and not algebraic expression with sum of sines. If I add there other variables, I still get results with decimal points, like in approx. mode. This occurs both in real and complex modes. Is there any way to change this in order to get the results as algebraic expressions with integers? My TI-89 gives algebraic expression in this case, but sometimes I prefer to do calculations on HP without turning to TI. 2. Simplification of powers to exponentials. If I enter 1/X^N the result is displayed as 1/EXP(N*LN(X)) I understand that mathematically it's correct, but I'd like to know if there is any way to prevent this simplification. I don't like the idea to run EXPAND() function every time I want to bring this expression to 1/X^N form. TI-89 in this case displays the result as x^-n which is more comfortable to work. 3. Entering EXP(X)+EXP(-X) gives as result: (EXP(x)^2+1)/EXP(X) Is it possible to do something in order to leave such expressions in their original forms without running LIN() function every time? 4. Simplification in series. I tried to calculate sum of geometric series. I entered: ª(n=1,N,a1*q^(n-1)) The result was: (a1*EXP((N+1)*LN(q))-q*a1)/(q^2-q) The question is the same: are there any settings that allow to get rid of EXP() and LN() functions where they are really non needed? In this example I have to run EXPAND then SIMPLIFY and then EXPAND again to bring it to the form: (a1*q^N-a1)/(q-1) === Subject: Some questions about simplification posting-account=GwYXSwoAAAB-cHwPy5IB1QHXTYwChN6w Gecko/2009042316 Firefox/3.0.10,gzip(gfe),gzip(gfe) I use HP 49G+/50G for about half a year for my studies. You have to run MEAN first to get the value, put in the other coordinate, SWAP if necessary, and use R->C to get your final coordinate. (R->C is in MTH-CMPLX.)
