Correct, evething on these tests could be solved with any cheap $ 5 solar cculator, l one needs are some basic operations, y^x, and some trigonometric functions. But then why bother with an HP49+? so true, f factors are tabulated in Lindeburg, Appendix A-32, but only after determining Re and relative roughness, and some further interpolations. so, there are hundreds of nomograms, developed 100 years ago. I just finished coding the Fluids Section in Lindeburg's Practice Problems for the Mechanic Engineering PE Exam: A Companion to the Mechanic Engineering Reference Manu, 11th Edition, 2000. There are many problems there that are categorized: Time limit: one hour, such as 17-11, a Hardy Cross problem, or 18-9, pumping gasoline and finding the operating point. These and others can be solved in a minutes rather than one hour. The problems themselves are not that hard but extremely longwinded and cumbersome. I took the Civil PE many years ago and the HP48GX made life so much easier, with Open Channel Hydraulics and Sanita Engineering. Anyhow, l this is now water under the bridge. The question is this: is the HP49+ viable in re life for re applications? That I actuly doubt, unless its awesome programming powers are harnessed. Otherwise people will punch numbers into spreadsheets obtained with the above mentioned solar cculators. Is it not time for a change? === Subject: Re: Learning System RPL - 49g+ > Anyhow, l this is now water under the bridge. The question is this: is > the HP49+ viable in re life for re applications? That I actuly doubt, > unless its awesome programming powers are harnessed. Otherwise people will > punch numbers into spreadsheets obtained with the above mentioned solar > cculators. Is it not time for a change? Agreed. In practice I use my HP48GX fairly infrequently. Most complex cculations I do are with Excel spreadsheets, or with speciized sofare. As an example I frequently cculate mass and CG of components and assemblies but why would I do so in my cculator when my CAD sofare has a utility that does that and more for me. The advantage in Excel (which is what draws me to it anyway) is it's accessibility, the interface (I can type with a full keyboard), and the ability to program in VB for things I require that are not available out of the box. That said, I still look for things to program into my GX. === Subject: Re: Learning System RPL - 49g+ the > ability to program in VB for things I require that are not available out > of the box. > That said, I still look for things to program into my GX. Anthony, It was nice to discuss things with you. We should stop soon, since we are ready at the bottom of the list. If GX was not a typo, you should forget using the 48GX for programming, it's too slow. Only the 49+ can possibly compete with Excel. I so love programming in VB. But in my line of work (Energy engineering) I did discover some applications where the 49+ (and only this one) can outdo Excel and even some commerci, speci sofare (like given the sensible and latent load find the coil capacity in HVAC). That's because the HP is so equation friendly, AND it has this (little appreciated and used) feature cled Multiple Equation Solver. === Subject: Re: Old Norton Desktop HP cc emulator Grumpy Aero Guy , transmitted to the comp.sys.hp48 readers around the world, indicating : > I'd start with an e-mail question to symantec. After l, I've (nearly) succeeded in porting Eden, the french ultra-protected text-editing libra for HP48 (at least, I got a compilable source including l instructions in MASD source format), so hacking the source of Mig shouldn't be more difficult, since it is quite smler than Eden (Mig is about 7 Kb, and Eden about 11 Kb). Furthermore, I did experimently discover myself the BUSCC arguments/parameters that produce a tick/bip on the 49g+, therefore replacing the well-known LC 800 OUT=C sequence used in previous HP cculator models, depending on the vue of C:B : to do such bips on the new cculator, use the following sequence : LC xy BUSCC $90 I might add that the BUSCC instruction seems to often/ways use a o-nibbles parameter just after it. So, in order to understand the Nosy-hacked Flash ROM Operating System of the 49g+, you'll have to peek the byte located just after the BUSCC command (and continue disassembling just after it) : this should provide new BUSCC parameter vues for FSE, MOVEDOWN, MOVEUP and CREATETEMP, l commands for which, as guessed by Samuel Thibault in a previous post ), ARM9 code has certainly been directly written. By the way, if somebody is interested in helping me finly completing the job about Eden : now we have the source, despite the disappearance of HpFox, the origin (and a little paranoid) author of Eden and who protected his libra so much, so you can write to me. . === Subject: Re: Time execution of Saturn-emulated instructions on ARM9 > I might add that the BUSCC instruction seems to often/ways use a > o-nibbles parameter just after it. Just to clarify, the BUSCC instruction ways has a minimum of o nibbles after it. The BUSCC code selection mechanism is triggered by these o nibbles, so l BUSCC instructions will have these nibbles. There are some instances, however, where BUSCC has more than o nibbles after it. For instance, BUSCC 82, which has one extra nibble for a tot of six, and BUSCC 83 which has three extra nibbles. First one has reported in the NG that the reason is contact-difficulties for the unreliability. With the so named wiggle-fix, the difficulties *seem to be gone. In RPN-mode type fast 111222333444555666777888999 ENTER, re-type the number and type the [-]-key, which should give 0 in exact-mode! I did the wiggle-fix for failed keys, but without success. I have found out through ting that a hazard time from 10 to 20% appears through fast tapping. After easy tapping a button, feedback is coincidently! The key-click is useless since it is covered by the mechanic sound of the keys. This seems to reduce the problem, but it does not solve it. I assume we are tking about o different problems. - With 'wiggle fix some remain from the production could be removed. This can improve the problem for some dirty keys. - l keys react accidently, when light/easy tapped. regards === Subject: Re: hp 49g+; still unreliable key-reactions > Hello together, > I am owner of a d new hp 49g+, which is now > 8 days under heavy use (Seri CN347010xx, rom 1.23) > The key-reactions on the hp 49g+ are ve unreliable.
