The battery pack will not drop off easily since it's serviceable - that is: you need a carry a screwdriver, too... You also can use the sled to have another battery with you If you don't use the I/O of the sled you may double your battery life with the 2nd battery Maybe you want to have a couple of exztra Lion for both of them... Anyway notice that also flag -65 affects the displays as I mentioned above: if I think right, the problem you had is on an object that stays on two lines or more (like a matrix or a fraction). To help you better understand how textbook display works, just keep in mind that if there's an active setting which forces an object to stay on a single line, the textbook will not be applied to that object. After some preparations SOLV invokes the new EQL+ SOLV item from RS NUM.SLV which looks whether EQ has a single or more than one equation. Then is sets a suitable menu. This brings up an issue I have that people need to work on somehow... I (and I expect many other people) have never used an HP48 class of calculator.. I only dreamed of it back when they were in vogue. IMHO too much of what we do and know about the HP49 class of calculator is very dependant on having this history of knowledge from the past... Part of the reason is because the crap documentation that started when the 49 came out to be sure... But I think that the people who design these high end calculators need to give some thought to the point that it shouldn't be necessary for the user to download the manuals for the previous 3 classes of calculator to learn what and how to use their calc... I'd submit that the way things were done in the past with the HP48 had to do with necessity, due to squeezing so much power into a tiny processor, but with the more powerful 49, it can be easier/more intuitive. I guess what I'm saying is that I think that when people write functionality for the 49+, I think they should give some thought to the fact that many of the new users don't think the way that 48 users had to, and shouldn't need to... This calculator is powerful enough that it can run some fluff in the way of intuitive interface... Otherwise the majority will go back to the (perhaps less powerful) TI route. You're completely right. The 49+ designers had enough time to learn English and to write good and complete docus. But what's the result? If at least the operating system would run flawlessly, but... If I were the 49+ designer I wouldn't sleep until at least the most ugly bugs in ROM 1.23 would were fixed. I really don't know why we in this NG are so tolerant towards bugs in the OS. In EQL+.htm at least 3 such bugs are mentioned because EQL+ is affected by these. Since EQL+ is loaded by many users (not only a few people from the NG), these bugs will become widely known. I'm relatively new here; I'm an HP fan (I have about 20 HPs in my collection), however I'm in business, so I normally stick to the finance calcs (17BII/19BII) I'm also taking some business courses, and find that the large display of my 48GX is preferable over the one-line display of the financials. I'd like to marry the two somehow. 1. Are there any reliable apps I could download for my 48GX (or the 48GII/49G+)that would provide TVM, cashflow, IRR, etc calculations? I know that HP made a finance pac for the 48, however it runs around $100US and is hard to find. 2. Although I'm not a heavy 48 user, I would like to purchase either a 48GII or a 49G+ to add to my collection, and to be honest, keyboard quality is my deciding factor (in other words, since I'm not a power user, I would give up the additional features of the 49G+ if the 48GII had a much better keyboard). I've read a number of posts and many say that the 48GII keyboard is superior; is that indeed the case? I find it hard to believe that the same manufacturer would put better quality components in the lower end model, but I guess anything is possible. So, after that diatribe, my question; is it model or manufacture date that drives keyboard quality? Were early 48GIIs just as bad as early 49G+s, and now they are both the same? (And also, if anyone has any advice, please feel free to share it!) 3. Third (and final) question: I live in Toronto, Canada. Does anyone know of retailers that would stock these units without having to special order (e.g. Staples)? I've seen some 49G+s at the electronics stores on Yonge, but the packaging looks worn, so I'm not confident that they are the newer units. I don't know any way to access part of a file on Well, I'm not completely familiar with the FAT16 filesystem, certianly not familiar enough to implement it on my own, but it seems to me that it shouldn't be too hard to write simple file i/o for the SD card on the 49g+. We know what CPU chip is used in the 49g+ (Samsung S3C2410X01), and it is known by the manufacturer's specifications that this chip uses an integrated SD card interface. Wouldn't it make sense that HP used that built-in interface instead of incorporating another one? If that is the case, then we would have to write the ARM assembly code to access the SD card per Samsung's specifications, for the hardware-level file access (ie. specify an address, and get a byte). Then, we'd have to implement at least the file input portion of the FAT16 filesystem, to control the hardware layer functions. That could either be done in ARM assembly, or the HW layer data could be passed back to the Saturn environment where we could write the FAT16 implementation in sysRPL. Either way, the resulting data could be placed in smaller user-accessible objects in memory. Again, I'm not sure exactly how the FAT16 filesystem is implemented, but it seems to me that a little research could turn up the specifications, and that implementation would likely be the hardest part of the project. There are other tools for working on system RPL as well, such as the HP Connectivity kit, which make working on very large files more convenient. Before you start with SysRPL you should be familiar with UsrRPL and you should use the ARCHIEVE and RESTORE commands or better Filer6 from Wolfgang. Download progsysrpl.pdf from Eric's Site and start reading the Attachment. This is a documentation about SysRPL. Read carfully OT49-docu and try ->XU with UsrRPL programs. With OT49 you can start writing sysRPL. The more luxery but also more complex tool is Emacs with Nosy. CQIF is not supported anymore with Emacs. First nice examples of SysRPL-commands you find by making your own Key-Assingments with Wolfgangs Keyman or by hacking standard keys. But why not replacing the 0 in your program by nice self-painted grob or a grob list (of a rocket start, say) from which EQL+ automatically makes an animation? The list must have a real at the end, the delay time. There are infinitely many possibilites to make a nice and useful UsrBox. More important as pictures is that you can solve your equation system by declaring which are the knowns and which the unknowns of the variables. How to procede here is now explained in detail in the EQL+.htm Appendix which was finished only today. I dragged my UsrBox.txt into the Con4x window, where it copied onto the calculator. I closed Con4x, ran Eql+, moved to the correct directory, pressed the UBox button and all was well... It seems that Con4x cut the *.txt off the file name for me and left UsrBox in a state where it worked. I think the UsrBox that Wolfgang supplies is compressed, but I'm not positive.. but you are correct that his version does not read out as text. I'm not sure what your problem is, but I assure you that I just did the above twice into two different directories on my calculator and it worked great. I have no experience about trouble of ~sys command as you are facing. I am using followings on ROM1.24 of 49G (not plus); and some other WR's tools (ACC, APPSman, Filer2, Unitman, Hide). Only LIBMAN MUST be replaced to LIBMAN+ before pressing of LIB key (R-Shift 2) when you upgrade 49G's ROM (probably from 1.19-6) to 1.24, otherwise the system will be hanged up. Others are not necessary to be replaced to + (plus) version, however, I can test them if required. EMU48 is very helpful for this kinds of risky tests. Names of variables containing expressions, equations, or UDFs may be used in place of the objects themselves. It seems that no RPL program is accepted for the EQ field. Hi Cyrille, hi all: I'm with you there, and certainly I share the same respect for JYA and the Hydrix team - there's no question of that. JYA is among on of few who have thought seriously about giving real grunt to a handheld - I just don't want it to be a PDA on steroids - but a real gadget that can be used for solid work. Maybe not in this production run of Qonos and probably not for a while, but I think JYA has the vision to go there, it's definitely a part of the market that has never been tapped into - a market for scientific handhelds where truly *productive* work can be acheived. It's convenient to overlook the floating point issues with the Xscale - ideas here are really constrained by capabilities in hardware; that's kind of where my argument falls of the edge of a square earth ;-) Yet as I said before, ... we are not too far behind (if not there already) where this type of capability *is* and *should* be a reality in a handheld. Given the design goals of the initial Qonos project, that won't turn to reality just yet - but I'd definitly like to see Hydrix go down that path on day; and I think they are just the team to do it - and to put action to my words I'd even buy considerable shares in Hydrix if it ever went public, I really believe in this group. The HP48/9 series is so nice because everything is integrated into one well thought out software environment. A bunch of seperate GTk apps running under Linux isn't going to be nearly as well integrated, even if it is more powerful. (eg: How do I write a program that manipulates an equation using the HP49 emulator and then uses MathsExplorer to plot it at native resolution? How do I sample a data point from the sled's ADC using the TI-89 emulator?) IMO, More than any hardware issue, the software is what will make or break this thing as a super calculator. I guess the target market has been stated as being higher-end than that, but it would have been nice to have a truly next-generation calcualtor both in body and in spirit. It knows nothing about MMU or about any peripheral, pure ISA simulation. It is faster than any other interpretive ARM simulator I know. And you know what its speed is? 17M instructions per second on a 1 GHz Athlon... OK it is written in C, but I don't think going to assembly language would speed it up enough to overcome the increased slowness of taking into account real hardware. So you will have to write a dynamic recompiling simulator or statically translate the ROM (that may be easier, but you would need anywayan ISA simulator, be it an interpreter or a dynamic recompiler, to run other ARM programs). Being able to rock out to music while doing math sounds like a great idea. I put a mono headphone jack in my first 49G. And they were all minor and it was obvious what was happening. 1) you cant do a 79 ENTER * to square a number. But the fix was pretty easy. just do 79 ENTER ENTER *. your finger is already on the enter key, hitting it twice is fast and easy. 2) The unlimited (except by available memory) stack size. This took almost no getting used to and comes in handy a lot. There was one small disadvantage which brings me to the third point which is related to this one. 3) Since the stack doesn't have a predefined size there is no top item that get copied every time the stack drops so doing something like finding the first 9 powers of 2 isn't as easy as it used to be but how often do you do stuff like that. On the 4 stack level calculators you would just do 2 ENTER ENTER ENTER * * * * * * * * * after each * you would have the next multiple of 2 in X and you could keep going till you got an over flow, which I some times did when I was in high school sitting through those boring history classes :) > BTW I don't think the stack clears itself after running a program. I don't believe the speed setting (1st element) in IOPAR really makes any difference with the 49g+, but it can't hurt to set it to match. The 3rd and 4th parameters in IOPAR are for receive and transmit pacing on the 48 series, and as long as they're real numbers, have no effect on the 49 series; just leave them at 0. The 5th element is for the Kermit checksum method, and has no effect on printing. The 6th (last) element in IOPAR is for the translation mode, and does affect printing via wire, even if the output is really IrDA. The translations are the same as for Kermit ASCII transfers, except that Line Feeds are translated to the line termination string (last element in PRTPAR) regardless of the translation mode, instead of always a CRLF pair with modes 1-3. This isn't used with flag -34 clear (Print via IR). In PRTPAR, the 1st element is the print delay in seconds, added after each print line; I'd try 0. first, but if you start getting buffer overruns (indicated by a black box with a slash through it), increase the value until there's a slight pause between lines. With flag -34 clear (Print via IR), up to 200 bytes are sent without adding delays. The 2nd element in PRTPAR is the remapping string; it doesn't have any effect when printing via wire, but with flag -34 clear (Print via IR) characters 128-255 can be remapped according to this string. If you can use an Arial font with the printer in HPIR mode, this might be useful. The 3rd element in IOPAR is the line length. Change it to 24., 32., or 48. to match the printer's setting for printing in IrDA mode. This is ignored when flag -34 is clear (print via IR). The 4th and last element in PRTPAR is the line termination string, which will replace any Line Feed control code outside of a graphics escape sequence when printing via wire. This is ignored when flag -34 is clear (Print via IR). I see a mention of data collection, but not of RS-232 (or whatever it's called now). In my opinion, an RS-232 compatible port is a must for data collection. Preferably of the 9-wire variety, but 3-wire suffices for many purposes. It definitely should have a functional XON/XOFF software flow control option, and would be even better with an option to use ENQ/ACK, ETX/ACK, or even any user-defined pair as an alternative. I don't see parity as very useful for communications, but for compatibility with other devices, better to include the various parity (and pseudo-parity) options. It wouldn't hurt to include options for number of data bits and stop bits. The importance of some features may depend on what alternative features are built-in. For example, I appreciate having USB on the 49g+ for connection to a PC, but I can do fast file transfers with an MMC/SD card, so I could easily do without the USB and would much prefer having an RS-232 compatible port available. -- === Subject: Re: Feel free to complete our survey Hi , hi folks. However, since most technical documents are B&W anyway, I've long since gotten used to using different linestyles/markers instead of colors. The most common example is with IC data books, or technical journals. I hope the Quonos is a rugged, no-nonsense scientific tool geared towards engineer and scientists. I'd use it to give presentations one-on-one to clients. Color would also attract the younger crowd. I can't get my kids interested in movie classics such as Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Witness for the Prosecution and many other great old movies because they (the movies, not my kids!) are in black and white. Cost is not really too much of a factor. My kids think nothing of ordering $500-$600 equipment just because it's cool so a calculator that's also useful could be in that price range and be thought of as an impulse item like the rain bonnets, nail clippers, car air fresheners and other things found hanging on racks at the checkout counters in supermarkets (I'm exaggerating, of course). In short, I think that with all the competition from PDAs, and now even cell phones getting into the act, there's no reason NOT to include all the capability possible.. detachable one like TI's, (PLEASE don't artificially decrease the capability so it will sell to students!) USB and RS-232 interfaces or a cable that will adapt one to the other, SD cards, ability to output directly to a printer (Bluetooth?) seamless interfacing with the desktop PC In the end, it doesn't matter. If it had AAA batteries, then battery life becomes more important. AAA's are inconvient to replace, so less then a week battery life is completely unacceptable - Black and White screen is the preferred option. If it had some sort of rechargeable scheme built in, then maybe only a days worth of battery life is bearable. Then colour becomes more feasible. I don't know whereabouts your product lies on the calculator/PDA spectrum, but I personally would prefer a black and white screen. Of course, I'm not certain that similar problems won't occur with USB on the 49g+. 3: An IrDA/RS-232 converter for the 49g+ has already been done, and this accessory is more expensive than the 49g+ itself. I could easily create a substantially cutback version of my interface, make it much smaller and much less expensive. The packetizing would still be available, as would other custom features. The end result would be a small circuit board, about 1x1 with IrDA on one end and RS-232 out the other. No case included. It would be intended for experimenting or whatever. If this is of interest to anybody, please post here. What price would you pay? If there is enough response and the price people are willing to pay is reasonable, I will make it. Who said anything about full speed? Why not low speed? The idea is to take an appropriate host controller (possibly something like an ISP1161) and use a PIC to interface to it.
