How do u exactly convert HP 48 programs to HP 49 format
I am talking about the libraries

Hi together,
I made first experiance with pretty print lim (LIMIT)
1. Acess via CAT is difficult, because of missing LIMIT and slow access to
lim.
    How can the cursor step to lim, avoiding to use exessive down-arrow?
    LIMIT is still existing, but not in the CAT.
    Hint: it is fast accessible via CALC LIMIT lim
2. sin(X) X / 0. lim gives a lim error numeric input (0. as a real is 
an
exception!)?
3. sin(X) X / 0 lim gives 1  (0 as a zint works)
4. Typing lim x=0 sin(x)/x in EQW and simplify gives 1 in exact mode and
hangs
    up in approx mode
5. Undo exchanges x=0 with sin(x)/x?
6. Typing lim x=0 sin..., ENTER and up-arrow EDIT will not allow to enter
again
because the = gives a syntax error (= which is shown as arrow in 
pretty
print)?
7. Exchanging = by an arrow will not give the expected result.
8.  Wolfgangs 3tog from OT49 is not able to rebuild the pritty print from
the stack.
I think some reactions are not intended and hope this test contributes to
an improvement for further version*s :-)

   When i plug the cable into the calculator, it's put dark the screen,

if you plug the cable end to the calc with nothing else connected to the

end, then you probably have something wrong with your cable ( a short in 
the
cable). if the screen fades away, it is because is pulling too much current 
( a
short)

Hi,
Did you put the connector the right way up? I.e. with the HP-emblem on
top when connected to the calculator. The connector isn't symmetrical,
the rounded edges belong on the downside.

Hello,
Having some issues with my 49G, seems at random startups it does a 
warmboot.  I read a thread on that awhile ago and can't remember if anyone 
came up with any good ideas.  I don't loose my memory but it is really 
annoying loosing all my settings every day or so.
It seems to have started to happen since I went to 1.19-6.  I tried 
clearing all memory and removing all libraries and it still does it.  It 
seems to happen only if the calculator has been off for awhile (say more 
than a couple hours).  I checked the batteries and they are still good.
However since no one else seems to be having the problem I don't think it 
is the new OS update.  However maybe I'll go back to 1.19-5 and make sure.

In a CHOOSE menu there is a little delay after pressing a
character that is a wait for further characters for a closer
jump -- i.e. 'Ca' instead of just 'C' to jump to 'Cat', 'Cattle',
etc.  How can I change this delay, or terminate it after a
certain number of characters entered?

This is probably a really stupid question but I have been unable to
find the answer in HP's users guide.
I have just switched over from a TI-89 to an HP 49G.
In order to enter polar values for a complex number with the TI all I
had to do was enter (magnitude<angle) and to enter rectangular values
I would enter Real+i or (Real,Imaginary).
I have figured out the HP will accept the rectangular form as
(Real,Imaginary) but I don't know how to enter the number in polar
form.  I have noticed that when the mode is set for polar and degrees
when I enter (Real,imaginary) I get the output in polar form.  This
form, when reentered, gets an error message.
Thanks for any help in this matter.

Why with complex the CAS behaviour its not the same?
More and more experience I take on the HP49G, more I think this machine is 
a
sort of exceptions collection!! For problems which seem to be similar, the
calc can give two differents solutions. I simply think it's not good
symbolic EXPAND does something different from numeric EXPAND. And isn't
'3+4*i' an algebraic as 'x+i*y'?
I think I'll have a new headache in minutes :o(.

Oh, perhaps our dreams should be directed to more interesting machines:
the HP-67, HP-41, HP-71 and, of course, the HP48 can still fill many pages
of magazines (even new books are published from time to time). Next year

HP-35 will celebrate its 30th anniversary (and my club, HPCC, its 20th!).
Many thinks are still to come! You ain't seen nothin' yet! :-)

From what has been posted here for so long, one can see that the 49
works well, when you simply follow the rules. There are too many
examples where generally speaking an output can't be directly used as
input, not only because some kind of re-writing must be done, but
because many system parts don't seem to know what other parts do. So
it is left to the user to do the steps between.
Fully agree! When the number of commands goes to hundreds, the
possible combinations of commands is immense. The documentation then
must go beyond the simple listing of command name and its workings.
The HP49G allows to combine capabilities on different subjects in a
way, that very unusual (and sometimes unexpected) features are
possible. But the process of discovering about such things is very
difficult, when one has only the manuals that come with the
calculator. The whole work of documenting features and finding bugs
that has been done here, should have been done by HP itself. ( Or do
they expect us to test and document their product? ) Let me pretend
for a moment that I am someone who only wants to use the 49 as a tool
in his/her work and doesn't care about hows or whys or CAS-programing.
What would such a person say? Something like: I really enjoy reading
the postings here, and also post myself, if I find something that is
worth mentioning. But, buddies at HP, I am not an HP employee and so
my main working time must be used for what I am paid for. The HP49
should be my tool, not my subject of work. I think there are many too
many people who feel that way. Yes, the 49 is a complex (not
complicated but complex) tool, but if it has to be that way, then in
heavens sake, document it properly!!!!!

Yes, I wonder if some new enhanced TI92+ will be made. The same
hardware but much better software. I mean the built-in software
programed more efficiently and squeeze any bit of performance out of
the machine. Plus all the wonderful things that guys like Bhuvanesh
have made so far. (Plus RPN, but this is never going to happen...)
Oh you mean *these* guys. Well, I'm on a mission for BORG, errrhh, GOD
of course.
I also find the 67 and the 41 still amazing. But I think the main
point of my interest towards these machines is, how much can be done
with so few things. Amazing!!!
Yep, but I hope those things come in my expected life time. ;-) Or
should I re-incarnate as long as necessary to hold an HP58 or even a
BORG200 in my hands at the end? My karma-calculator lookup tables are
messed up, so I wish the next super calculator arrives while I am
still here. ;-)

No, unfortunately. The original TI-92 did (that's where the TI-92 Plus
module used to fit, until the TI-92+ came along and integrated the
module into the system while removing the expansion port).

something like this (on a calculator scale), and that's what I like 
about it.

That's what Urroz' books are about, I can only recommend them. What I 
still miss though is a comprehensive CAS tutorial, with exercises. 
Anytime I'm banging around in the EQW I find myself trying to remember 
what the heck all these fine simplification rules were for. :)

Start EMU48, go to File/Settings menu and put the appropriate COM port
in Wire field. Now you can connect your real HP with the emulated one
by your PC cable.

The HP49 doesn't accepts such implicit equations. The best you can do
here is to solve the equation for z and plot each of the parts separately
(with FAST3D).
It allows one to plot a set of points rather than a function. It takes a
2D matrix (which represents a set of z values), a low bound and a high
bound. The x and y values are placed on a grid of constant spacing).

From this and Werner Huysegoms' follow-up, it appears that
the loop counter for numeric computation with exact
integers was made a bint (20 bits), which is efficient
for SysRPL program looping; however, it inadvertently
led to an unnecessary limitation upon the *original*input*
arguments, because the value of COMB(n,r) is often
quite reasonable and computable even when 'n' is
much larger than 2^20 (and also for large 'r' which
are near a large 'n' in value).
If Werner's suggestion were taken, and found its way into
the next beta ROM, then this limitation would be removed,
and the calc would be able to handle any inputs
for which the output is perfectly well defined and computable
(which the real-valued function is already able to handle);
this would be a fine example of how HP calcs generally
always deliver answers (and correct answers) whenever
there exist any, whereas those other brands often give up
and/or start to deliver questionable results.
The other remaining issue was the need to use QUOTE,
the absence of which currently (1.19-5) leads to
incorrect numeric results; if this also were taken care of,
then it's a fine combination of improvements, prompted by
the alert user (Josu) who first noted the discrepancy
[before the rest of us got carried away discussing it :]

 Wolfgang Rautenberg's Keyman is one of the most useful tools I found
for the hp4x.
Using it, I found a little problem with some of the assignments of the
ASNs command: the RS+A ~ RS+F.
This is the problem: edit a string or a prog with the down key and
then press RS+(A~F). You will see no effect until you finish the edit.
Then you found in the stack the SA (?) of the labels that was
displayed when you press that combination. Today I press it by mistake
and get a TTRM after this, when I try to erase the garbage on the
stack (perhaps unrelated).
Maybe they can be improved with the IfE?P command?
   
I've never been charged for such calls. However, when I had to make a call
that couldn't be answered by customer support, and was asking them to help
me to do something (not including in warranty, such as how to configure 
step
by step a plotter) then I had to pay, which I believe is perectly normal as
you make somebody work for you, outside of the scope of warranty.
Regarding on how to get updated manual, it seems to me that you should be
able to get the information from the HP customer support free of charge.

 Create a real matrix with at least three columns and store it on a
variable named, say, A.
Now enter in the Fit Data input form in STAT menu. Highlight
Sigmadat and press choose. A won't appear, and I think it should.
Now press [ON], and higlight sigmadat again, press [NXT] and [CALC]
softmenu. The stack appears; recall matrix A on the stack and press
OK. Invalid object type message appears. But if you press [OK]
softmenu twice the input is accepted.
Now suppose we need to make a scatterplot of inserted data in matrix
A. First, put your calc in approx mode (~ symbol must appear in the
status bar). Enter in PLOT SETUP window and select Scatter as plot
type. Now try to change columns to plot changing, say, column 2 in
column 3. After a while, a Bad Argument Type error appears. This is
because the only allowed obj type in Cols fields is Integer type;
but in approx mode every input is converted in real. In fact, if you
turn your calc in exact mode the problem disappear.
I understand. Perhaps the software for business is a little bit
neglected, because most people interested for the flag ships of HP are
engineers (?)
You could make a list of all your equations, store them in the
variable named `EQ` and start the Multi Equation Solver. It does what
you want, I think.
Same opinion. If the small thingie can do what I need, then leave the
big ones at home. But really, try the MES. You just type your
equations once. (Don`t need to program them, just type them in the
Equation Writer and you`re done.)
bit, but there are many disadvantages:
1.  The built in clock doesn't work right afterward.
2.  It drains batteries faster than a speeding bullet.
3.  It probably decreases the reliability and durability of the calculator,
since it has to be soldered in.
4.  I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of right now.

Yes, it is strange. I would expect the HP49 to replace the Xt with Xtt
when EVALuating (and then Xtt with Xttt and so on.) At least that is
what mine does in many cases when an antiderivative can`t be found.
But this seems to be an exception. Does ITNVX use a different
algorithm than EVAL in this case? Or does INTVX bring the integral in
a form that the CAS can handle but forgets to go on evaluating it, so
you must evaluate it yourself?
Anyway, this shows that trying an EVAL after INTVX didn`t work, is
sometimes worth doing it.

That's for sure a very good idea. When you're ready I think it's time
for me to buy a 49 ;-)
A first and cheap step would be just to merge the different pdf's
into one, so you can search easier. That just takes some minutes :-)
Adding a (hyperlinked) index is much more work but would be very
helpful! Do you want to use Acrobat for this work?
I don't have Acrobat (way to expensive for casual use...)
Just merging to pdf's can be done with the free ghostscript (or with a
demo version of glance's pdftools).

On my SuSE system, /var/lock is 775 root:uucp; i.e. I had to add my user
to the uucp group. /dev/ttyS0 is 600 user:tty, the symlink /dev/modem
