But after another look at HP's instructions at: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?pna meOID=351776&prodSeriesId=33568&prodTypeId=215348&basePartNum=COL4344&locBase partNum=ca-14082-7 I see that their instructions are for HP49Gplus_HP48GII_connectivity_kit_and_USB_drivers.exe, presumably some sort of self-extracting self-executing installation routine. The instructions should at least be for the file that they actually make available for download. As it is, at best the instructions are unneeded; at worst they could cause some confusion. There is some value to operator-proof installation files such as they describe, but all too often they don't work correctly; maybe some make unwarranted assumptions about the system the application is to be installed on. Personally, I like to be able to extract the contents and have a look at any readme files and so on before running SETUP.EXE or INSTALL.EXE. Packaging the application as a zip file does assume that the user has an unzip utility available and a basic understanding of how to use it, but it's intended for users of advanced HP calculators, so I expect that most of them know what to do with it, and quickly realize that the instructions on HP's web site are just plain wrong. It's not as if the zip format were something new. I'm not too sure that HP's Webmasters pay much attention to how the developers want the files to be packaged. As for the any key, I've found that the big blank bar at the bottom of the keyboard normally works well. Experimentally, I've found that some others, such as shift keys, usually don't work as the any key. -- James === Subject: Re: Help with installing Conn4x I guess I wasn't understanding at first, because I couldn't see a problem. I like to keep the uncompressed files on my HD and back them up. That way, should a flatline be in order, I don't have to go scouring the net for all my important little programs and drivers. Scott Chapin BTW.....I found the Any key a long long time ago ;-) > James: > I agree with you that it is relatively easy, however, there is a whole > bunch of people out there who still wonder where the Any key is :-) > Luis > Moreover, there is a convenient Install button on the Winzip window > which does not work because of the particular setup of this Conn4x zip > file > Maybe you should be complaining to the sellers of WinZip? > Personally, I prefer 7-Zip. Of course, I'm still using an old keyboard, so that might > be some of my problem. No, unfortunately not. I get severe key bounce on my newest replacement and the previous replacement. Neither had to be subjected to the wiggle fix. A deliberate staccato press of the keys seems to avert problems. Scott Chapin === Subject: Re: 49G+ Missed keystrokes I don't have any problem with double keypresses even though my machine is a CN40****, I've seen a lot a complaints about it though. I was wondering, would activating the keyclick improve this problem. Just a thought. I have a CNA502 series replacement that I haven't had much occasion to use yet (I've been working with it some and the keys feel totally different than my CNA420, which broke within the first 5 - 6 months of use or so). However, I haven't worked with it enough to recreate this problem of keys breaking in the previous timeframe and my warranty will run out in December. Can anyone confirm for me that the 502 series keyboard will break or === Subject: Re: HHC2005 Is Coming Soon > Sorry, this thread is about inviting people to the conference and not > assembling a posse. For me, only the alarms, CKKADJ, and the painted keyboard are issues, which are fairly minor in the scheme of things. I expect most folks don't even care about the first two items? Despite the problems the 49g+ is still the best thing going. Let's wait to see what happens. I bet it will be good.
