A36 ==== There are diffies without am inverse. In fact, an inverse (x1 x2 x3 x4) of a given diffy (a b c d) may be found in the solutions os the system a = (x1 - x2)^2, b = (x2 - x3)^2, c = (x3 - x4)^2, d = (x4 - x1)^2. And our beloved 49 gracefully denies to solve this stuff. Actually, I don't have an algorithm for the inverse, I just found some inverses using MuPad: solve({a=(x1-x2)^2,b=(x2-x3)^2,c=(x3-x4)^2,d=(x4-x1)^2},{x1,x2,x3,x4}); But even MuPad doesn't give a general solution. Well, you can't: (0 1 0 3) (which is an inverse of (1 1 3 3) in your example) is a diffy without an inverse, what is proofed in a few ==== Yes, I actually tried this shortly after I posted this message. Now that we have established (or rather, you have established for me! :-) that there exists no general inverse, the question still remains: ==== Is there a way to tell if an HP 48GX in the blister pack has a black screen or a blue screen without opening the blister pack? I have purchased three HP 48GXs in the blister pack. Two have the black screen, one has the blue screen. ==== I'm too trying to develope an multitasking OS but principaly for the 49 (and maybe for the 48 and 39/40 if it's small). But I don't think the CAS function could be accesible bescause there will probably have no RPL stack (but if someone will write it ...). But as ShellOS, it can be possible to switch between my OS and the original OS. My OS is far from be finish but I think (I hope...) the kernel will be finish befor the end of the year. George: Do you just start write your OS ? If no, can you say what is write (if it isn't confidential) ? Good luck for your OS. You are invited to visit our homepage and download an complete description of all programs ==== Ok, thanks guys, I'll try the first thing first, but I'm pretty sure I'll have to open it and clean it out; hopefully it is not too late as its been dead for over a month now, been working hard this year, not much time left for having fun. H216ctor What kind of Integral-equation do you want to solve? Do you want to solve them symbolical or numerical? I can give you an example; maybe it fit's your needs. int(1.1,b,X*LN(X),X)=7 (int is the integration-sign on the HP49G of course) And now you want to solve for b. There are several ways to solve the equation. One way ist to integrate the term 'X*LN(X)' first. You can do this easily with the EQW or on the Stack. Example for RPN on the stack: (execute 'CASCFG' before you go ahead (You find it in the CAT-Menu)) 'X*LN(X)' 'INTVX' Example for ALG-mode: 'INTVX(X*SIN(X))' (You should get (in bot cases) '1/2*X^2*LN(X)+-1/4*X^2') You can solve this equation now with the NUM-Solver. Have a look in the user-guide. If you just want the numerical result you can do the whole thing in one step (But it takes a lot more time to solve it the following way): RPN Example: ['int(1.1,b,X*LN(X),X)=7'] ['b'] [1.2] 'MSLV' ALG-mode: MSLV('[int(1.1,b,X*LN(X),X)=7]','[a]','[1.2]') You should get ['3.987...'] (after a few minutes!) ==== ==== it has been brought to my attention that while ViewObject/SCROLL are displaying an object, there's no way to interrupt operation. Is there way to alter ViewObject's behaviour in order to add a CANCEL button ==== ==== and some | people will still be around that I know. ==== ==== ==== Is it possible to connect to my PC using the USB? Carl Not unless you have an adapter. Visit http://www.pricegrabber.com/ and search for usb serial adapter (but without the quotation marks). Note that if your calculator is the only thing you'll be using the serial port for, there's no need to spend extra for high speed adapters. Depending on your PC, you may be better off installing a serial I/O card. James thanks a lot for your work. I have already add my own equations to the directory. All rhis knoledge can't disappear this way.. These are sad days for all.. ==== let's not get nervous. Who says A must also say B. Let us form some BCO or whatsever to continue HP49 developement, maybe later under a new name. There are several possibilities. Since HP obviouly loosed its interest in high-quality calculators, it is perhaps willing to sell the soft-ware sources and all connected licences, including the production licence of the HP49 (a lot of people in China would loose their jobs if HP stops production). I think many people in this newsgroup and perhaps also some former developers would join a limited company to buy the licences and to continue soft- and hardware development unpayed, as a hobby, until the new calculator bears itself. Also some kind of cooperation with HP is thinkable. It is clear that the Saturn chip cannot be replaced, but it can perhaps somewhat be improved with minimal costs. But this is not an urgency because speed suffices for even very ambitious mathematical tasks and the present memory management is excellent. Obviously, basic changes in marketing policy are necessary, and documentation must be rewritten, complete and understandable by everybody who has a minimal mathematical background. I myself would take the burden to rewrite the docs (based on the relatively good 48 documentation and assisted by some native English-speaking experts). Complete CAS-documentation with accent on RPN mode is a challenging additional task (but not for me as a mathematican who doesn't rely on any CAS :-) I do not believe that PDAs or similar products can replace a first-quality calculator for students, engineers and scientists in the near future, and I do also not believe that school-teacher-calcs like the TIs can do the job :-) ==== Wolfgang Rautenberg a 216crit : ==== On Sat, 03 Nov 2001 21:34:49 +0100, Parisse Bernard I feel like I just walked into a party where everyone is leaving. I can not tell you how much I learned about mathematics, and computing. What a wonderful experience!!! Naturally, I kept up with the times, and loved the evolutinary progress of these machines. Later, I did notice that things started to slip. The user interface, the documentation. As an engineer (thanks all, to the fine HP engineers for their learning tools ... I do regret that this must happen, but I guess that if anyone could have changed HP's decision it would have been you, and since the decision is made, we must accept it as is (not happily though...). Secondly, keep up the fight for GPL'ing the HP49, I think most of the HP48/49-community supports you in this struggle ! Could it be that the GPL'ing would include documentation ???? The 49 as far as I can tell will still be made. They just won't be producing a ==== ==== I've read some good-bye messages from old time regulars, just because ACO is going down. In all the years i've been following this group (i bought my calc march 4 1996) and until the integration of the MK team in HP, it (the group) never needed corvallis or singapore ops. to produce excelent software and discussions, they helped (a lot) but were not essencial (or the essence) for the survival of the group, so why now, that the group goes more unsupported would all talent fly away? Many if not most of the most important hacks and code was born from the talent of individuals that had no influence or help whatsoever from HP, but from other people here. We have a lot more information now than ever, we can still count with valuable insight from people who actually worked on the calcs. Maybe it's because everything lately came from a much smaller bunch who tried to please everyone, instead of a greater effort from the whole, and that weekened this group? Can't we at least TRY to stay arround, like we always have, for the last few years? Why leave? Let's just revive the HP blank-stare feeling, Let's not just give up. Greetings Steve Sousa
