The 3rd thing should be how to escape out of a loop or hang or the like. (I got into a seeming-hang on trying to save a graphic -- machine frozen for two or three minutes, but with hour-glass thingie on.) The hp50g manuals sure don't point out in any obvious place how to abort from such a situation! QUESTION: how *do* you do it? Maybe I'm wrong, but for anyone used to hp-calculators, it seems at first thought best to simply keep it in RPN mode. For, if you want to enter something in infix, that single-quote-thingie lets you do that just fine. Seems to me that there's just too many (unpleasant) side effects from being in algebraic mode -- no level-nums (well, inverse-level nums, if you consider top of stack to be the most recently pushed obj), delayed execution of any expr typed in (requiring explicit eval?), etc, etc. Or am I wrong? IS there a reason to (sometimes) change the mode to algebraic -- and if so, why? (I need to learn this!) David === Subject: Re: hp50g: (old hp48sx user): any reason to EVER switch to algebraic mode? Well, I know about shift up-and-down: shift-right (red or whatever) up and down on choose-box, HIST, things like that, take the cursor all the way to the beginning or the end. shift-left (white) on up and down scroll the screen-full up or down (the FIRST such click *stupidly* goes to the final CURRENTLY-ON-SCREEN choice or whatever (meaning TWO double-button-pushes to scroll-down that FIRST time.) What are some of the OTHER possibilities, ie with the left and right arrows? Oh, apparantely undocumented, I've found (via mistaken key-pushes) that RIGHT-arrow will do a SWAP (on stack), and that an UP-arrow gets you into HIST (that HIST is *one nice feature*!) Steen, If you like, I have the algorithm posted for TI-Basic at this link: http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/376/37669.html There is also the Perrin test in the same zip file. The Perrin test uses another more involved modular recurrent sequence as a probablistic prime test though the Perrin test is much more powerful than the Lucas test - just takes roughly twice as long to calculate. As an example, an integer was posted to this thread: 4,498,414,682,539,051 The V-200 determined in less than a sec that the number is NOT prime, probably by trial division which it does very quickly. The factors were returned in just under 10sec. 46411 * 232051 * 417691 This integer passes the Lucas test and took the V-200 about 4.5sec to determine that the integer is probably prime. The same integer fails the Perrin test and it took the V-200 about 8.4 sec to determine that the integer is definitely NOT prime. These times are for TI-Basic versions. If you write versions in HPGCC I'm sure the execution times will be just a fraction of those. The same integer fails the Rabin-Miller test but not until the base prime of 19 which was the eighth prime base tested. JT > > I'd propose to do perform the Rabin-Miller > test to a very moderate number of bases and > then do a simple check with the Lucas Test > given above ( can be done very quickly mod > z using Q matrix, etc. ) > > That's a good suggestion, and one I'll probably attempt to implement. > > Steen === Subject: Re: Why don't give Miller-Rabin a chance? Steen Wrote: > That's odd, since PrimeQ in Mathematica uses Rabin-Miller with bases 2 > & 3 combined with the Lucas pseudoprime test - Wolfram states that this There are several different versions of these 'Lucas' probablistic tests floating around. I believe the one referenced would be what's called the Lucas-Lehmer test. I'd have to check but I think that's the same as the strong Lucas test. A certain combination of Rabin-Miller and Lucas-Lehmer has no known counterexamples at all yet. Best Rabin-Miller bases I've heard of is the { 2, 3, 7, 61, 24251 } prime bases given by Greathouse that takes you up to 10^16. I just found a reference to that: http://primes.utm.edu/prove/prove2_3.html Look also for Paul Pollack's 'Number Theory Programs for the TI-92' I do recall his algorithms were pretty good. About TI only trial dividing up to 1021... My mistake - I've always had it in my head and I don't know where I read it - about the TI isprime doing trial division up to 1E6 or something like that - does sound ridiculous now that I think about it! :-) I don't think TI's are quite *that* fast! Good luck with your project by the way, I'll bet it's tough to try and implement some of these tests in low-level code. I'll be very interested in seeing your results! I haven't tackled HPGCC myself yet - just downloaded and did some reading but no coding yet.... so hurry up, I need example code to learn from! ;-) JT > > If you like, I have the algorithm posted > for TI-Basic at this link: > > http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/376/37669.html > > > As an example, an integer was posted to > this thread: 4,498,414,682,539,051 > The V-200 determined in less than a sec > that the number is NOT prime, probably by > trial division which it does very quickly. > > The V-200 does trial division only up to 1021. > > This integer passes the Lucas test and took > the V-200 about 4.5sec to determine that > the integer is probably prime. > The same integer fails the Perrin test and > it took the V-200 about 8.4 sec to determine > that the integer is definitely NOT prime. > These times are for TI-Basic versions. When you run the connectivity software, do you see a folder view listing all the folders and allowing you to click on them? Or do you see a grey screen with a waving torch saying something like There does not appear to be a calculator attached? If the latter then the USB connection has not been made and that will be the cause. You need to investigate this. The two most common causes I've found have been the driver not installing properly (90%) and the USB port being incompatible in some way (10%). Try it with another USB port. Try installing the driver manually. The Conn3x.exe file can be found in the folder C:Program FilesHewlett-Packard and in that same folder you'll see a folder called USBDriver. Open this and you'll find a file called HPx9G.inf. Right click on this and choose the Install option. Nothing will appear to happen but the driver will be installed (again) and you may find this fixes things. For some reason the installation routine for the software sometimes fails to install the driver properly. 2. One of the most common sources of trouble is low batteries. The USB connection seems to require quite a lot of power and problems show up long before the low battery indicator lights up. The software may indicate that the connection is made but then be unable to do the transfer. Try replacing the batteries with fresh ones. Make sure they really are fresh and the best quality. Often ones that have been sitting on the shelf in the shop for years are no longer good. 3. Are you sure you've selected the folder containing the aplet that you want to transfer? I've found that people sometimes assume that the connectivity software will somehow magically know what you want transferred. You have to click on the folder to tell it. 4. Have you un-zipped the files? A lot of aplets download as zip files and you have to extract them before the software can transfer them. The connectivity software does not have this ability built in. Note that you may not realise they are zipped. If you Win XP added the ability to handle zip files and when you double click on them they open as what *looks* like a folder but isn't and other software probably won't be able to do this. You have to create a folder for them and then manually drag them from XP's folder to this real one. 5. You must un-zip each downloaded aplet into a separate folder. Each aplet, program etc has two files with it called HP39DIR.CUR and HP39DIR.000. These contain a record of what files are present and they are the first thing sent to the calculator, and they appear on the menu as options to download. If you extract an aplet's files into a folder containing another one those files will be overwritten and the aplets will become invisible to the calculator. Similarly you must NOT edit these files or change them in any way or they won't work. 6. Are you trying to download a progam into the aplet view or vice versa? Ok, hopefully somewhere in there is the solution to your problem. If not, try checking out the Help pages on my site at www.hphomeview.com. There are extensive instructions with pictures there. > I am having problem getting applets from my computer to my > calculator(HP 39GS). When -- at turn-on, while running a program (what program?), while using Filer, etc? Did you create any STARTERR program for yourself (to try to emulate 48G-style error display)?; if so, rename or delete it, and enjoy the built-in MSGBOX format instead (which waits for you to read the message), because that STARTERR will do just that sort of thing with errors occuring during Filer use, for example. If not, it would be helpful to get an idea *what* message(s) [repeat the activity which produces it until you catch it all :] Higher screen contrast might help.
