A9 ==== Guess you are right. They are doing their best to turn their products from high quality to ..., you know :-(. If you compare what you would get buying an HP in the past with what you get now, it is clear that nobody cares for quality anymore. Greetings, Nick. products would that This must be something recent. I've bought 2 49g's and both came with metal nameplates. I guess it was a year ago that I got the ==== Well, if by this you mean only the plates, then yes, it is recent. But the loss of quality over the years is something that you can observe, if you compare what comes out of the box nowadays and what you got, when you were buying some older HP model. Just go to http://www.hpmuseum.com and take a look at the pictures of what use to be meant by the words I bought an an HP. Nowadays, if there is no manual, they say it is environment protection, and all other cheap excuses for the things that are missing. (Special travel cases, accesories and the like.) Greetings, ==== ==== ==== ==== ==== www.samsoncables.com has them. Chep price too. I ordered from ==== I've decided it's time to replace the old HP-48. It got me through 4 years of engineering in college and another 5 years in design practice. I'm now going back to school and want a new machine that will do some of the stuff my 48 won't (it's only an S, but a die-hard number cruncher). I've looked at the TI-89 and the HP49 and decided on the 49. (We all have our reasons; I'll spare you mine.) The problem is that I'm temporarily living in Canada, where you can't just pop out to Office Depot and pick one up. They only carry the 48G+, but nothing higher. We don't have Fry's Electronics. We don't have Best Buy. We don't even have Circuit City. It's bleak. I did find one 49 at an electronics boutique. I bought it. After a day with it I was sure it was for me. Small problem: The serial number revealed that it was made in Indonesia and was old enough to have the screen, keyboard and serial port problems now fixed on newer Chinese models. Reluctantly I took it back. I can't seem to find another one. I can order it online from the US, but by the time I pay shipping, the outrageous Canadian tax (we're talking 15% here) and duty because it's made in China, ==== try to call HP Customer Care Center in Canada (905) 206-4663 (877) 621-4722 8am-8pm mon-fri EST maybe they can give you some info about retailers ==== --------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't know where in Canada you are, but here in Halifax I picked mine up at the Dalhousie University book store..I'd venture that any large University book store would be a good bet. They wanted $350 CDN + tax, which is roughly $260 US. That would have been fine, but they couldn't tell me anything about how old their stock was, or what the serial numbers might be. If these things are so hard to find in Canada, it seems a reasonable presumption that any stock on hand may have been sitting for quite some time. However, the problem is solved. I ordered it online from Samson Cables in Utah, who offers assurance that they are selling recently manufactured models, made in China, complete with cables and Advanced User's Guide. Their price was $159US + $8 shipping. I had it shipped to dear old mom in California, who is going to wrap it up pretty and ship it to me as a gift. those who replied.
