I put 300*IQUOT(X-3,144) in EQ using STEQ. Then I used the inform box
PLOT WINDOW - FUNCTION to setup the plot. Then in this inform box I
pressed ERASE DRAW and the plot was shown for a second with axes but
no function. Then the inform box was shown again. I pressed CANCEL to
return to the stack and then I pressed left arrow to go to the plot.
Until now no crash. But then I wanted to see if there is a function
plotted off screen and I pressed TRACE. That was it. Boom! Today I
repeated all this twice. I had one crash and one error Bad argument
type.

This would make me think that it's impossible to plot the IQUOT function...
bu actually when I was trying to reproduce the crash I actually succeeded

getting a plot of the IQUOT function..! The funny thing is that I'm no
longer able to recreate the right setup: an error box keeps popping up. It
has to be voodoo :-)

BP's site.
While somebody else is talking about simplification of expressions and
such, I thought I would just ask if there is some automatic
simplification in the square root command in the 49, ROM 1.18? My stack
looks as follows:
2: 1-2z^2
1: 4z^4 - 4z^2 + z
If I now take the root command on the keyboard, the result comes out as
2: 1-2z^2
1: sqrt(4z^4 - 4z^2 + z)
So far so good. It does display the pretty print root instead of sqrt().
I now add these two equations together with the + key, which leaves the
result
1: 1-2z^2 + sqrt(4z^4 - 4z^2 + z)
Still good. But if I now apply the sqrt-function again the result is not
1: sqrt(1-2z^2 + sqrt(4z^4 - 4z^2 + z))
which one would think it should be but

(-((2z^2-1)*sqrt(z-1))+sqrt(z-1)*sqrt(4z^4-4z^2+z)*sqrt(1-2z^2+sqrt(4z^4-4z^\

instead. Why is this?? I really would prefer sqrt(1-2z^2 + sqrt(4z^4 -
4z^2 + z)) over this result. So I go for the factor function in the ALG
menu. This leaves me with
1: (sqrt(1-2z^2+sqrt(4z^4-4z^2+z))*sqrt(z-1)*(-(2z^2
-1)+sqrt(4z^4-4z^2+z)))/(z-1)
Does the CAS have a problem with the sqrt(something + sqrt(something))??
It does'nt seem so, since such an element is included in all expression.
These equations will probably not format well in this mail, so maybe
somebody could try this out. Is this something that is corrected in
version 1.19-5?? Somebody please enlighten me.

There is simple simplification in the square-root key, as there is in the +
key. Square-roots have to be in normal form on the calc, and that is what
is
going on.
Use the EQW if you do not want it (which is most of the time probably).

Hi Ray!
I don't know why the command SQRT behaves that way, but if it returns
an answer, then the answer is correct, no matter if better readable or
not. Anyway, if you want the sqrt to be simply put on one expression,
then you can either:
1) Press down arrow while that expression is on stack level 1. This
takes the expression on the EQW. The whole expression is already
selected, so press the sqrt-key. This simply puts a sqrt around the
expression. Press ENTER to put the edited expression on the stack
again.
2) Use the command |vMATCH. (|v is down-arrow)
A small program for simply puting q sqrt arount an exprssion would be:
<< { &a v(&a) }
|vMATCH DROP
where v(&a) denotes the SQRT of &a.
Store this in SQRT and use it with an expression on stack level 1.

a nobody but a pioneer in hacking the HP48 and
by several other people who later became equally famous.

I think that many people in this generally highly

I cannot keep my mouth shut anymore - I have great professional respect of
you Wolfgang, and also you Detlef, you know that. You cannot be the police
in a public newsgroup. This group was built upon loose conversation, as is
most groups, virtual or real, worth being a part of. The tiny bit that

the TI dgs worth visiting, is the few regulars who, usually, have
intelligent conversations about other things than what the groups are there

VPN was probably *the* person I have missed the most on this board, and I'm
very glad he's back. In my eyes Nick is merely testing out this board,

finish. Then I can return to the 10 posts that I find interesting. Should I
demand that people behave in a special way, just to save 30 seconds of my

Yes, the thread was about the HP48GX. BUT:
1) This newsgroup is considered for both HP48 *and* HP49, just because
they are so similiar. Also, since there is not really a newsgroup of its
own for the other HP calculator series, they're occasionally discussed
here too. However it is considered good habit to prepend [48S], [48G],
[49]
etc. to the subject of a thread. (And thank you for tagging your [HUMOR]

2) I really don't know what else than the keyboard you would use to
enter any type of code into any of the 4x series. The 48G(X+) needs
extra assembler software, e.g. Jazz, HP-ASM etc. The 49 already has a
built-in assembler, but you'll want to install the extable.

as |x|-1?? The SOLVE command returns Non isolable operator. Any other
commands that I can try??

ROM 1.19_5 can solve this. It returns {X=-1 X=1}. (So perhaps you do
an update?)
I don't remember if ROM 1.18 has the command ASSUME. If it does then
you could do the following:
blue-shift 1/X)
Put the X on the stack and press ABS. This returns X because we made
the assumption previously. Now press 1 and then - to get you equation
Now press X UNASSUME, to remove all assumptions for X
Now put 'X<=0' on the stack and repeat the procedure for this case.
You have now two solutions X=1 and X=-1.
Now press X UNASSUME again, and then X ADDTOREAL (if your REALASSUME
contained X before doing all this.)
Hope it helped, though 1.19-5 is more comfortable when it comes to
such things.

That would be a good idea if only the representation changes: I guess
EXP(x) uses different algorithms from those used by x^y.
For x^y you need a general thing, but you (the system, I mean) could
implement something special for the very used EXP().

As the form that you asked me:

3. no negative power
it should be:
(x+2)^(1/6)/(x-4)^2
If you prefer roots the short form should be
xroot(6,(x+2))/(x-4)^2
You have to decide if expressions are transformed into root or power forms.
I don't know how the HP49G works, but I think that it doesn't change
internal all parts of an expression into one form (root, power, exp) and so
it fails in the end when it has to collect/simplify them.
If this should be solved, then it would be good if with help of a flag one
could choose between root, power, exp form to be displayed.
I'm sorry, but I've got only time the last and this week to read again this
email. And even before we dicussed in this group about simplification and
as
there were no one else who wanted or could solve it, so I made some simple
programs of my own. Is this a bad thing?

may be easier to understand in many cases

It would be easier too, if the HP49G would handle roots and powers as the
same an not as different expressions.
Example:
on would expect the same result.
In the last form you get the chance to eval (1/3)-1 to -2/3 and then to
finaly get a short form with one variable 1/(3*xroot(3;x)^2 a power form
would be also good, but the important is to get an easy expression.
When the expression is more complexe, you can't simplify it easely and in
some cases you can't do it, if for example you start with the xroot-form.
Try this one:
[DERIVX] xroot(3;cos(1-x^2))
and
[DERIVX] (cos(1-x^2)^(1/3))
and bring it to a simple form if you can.

I recently purchased a new 48GX because my old 48SX just stopped working
one
day. I've searched the web looking for solutions but no avail.
I hate to just throw it out if someone who likes to tinker inside these
machines could use it. If you send me an address label and the correct
postage I'll mail the thing with both user manuals to anyone who wants it.
My sugestion is to take a HP48 and two manuals in a box to the post office
and get the postage. Send me the stamp and a sticky address label to where
you would like it sent and I'll get a box that fits it from my work.
Please, I don't want to be hassled with incorrect postage. Otherwise just
send me $10 and I'm sure that will cover the postage.

If the free case is the same one I got about a year ago, it is a zipered
folding
case for penicls with an extra area with velro on it. It wasn't a 48 style
case
and very low quality. I think I saw something just like it at walmart for
1.50
when school supplies were on sale.

Eric has implemented this very nice possibility comment on programs on
hpcalc.org. And you can vote for a program. This can be used to keep
authors happy by telling them and the community that a program is
useful. And it can make it much easier to find the right programs on
hpcalc.
However, it only works if *many* people vote and comment.
So I suggest everyone here goes to hpcalc.org and votes for every
single program he/she has ever tried out. Write a comment if you have
anything important to say about it. Bad votes and comments are just
as useful as good votes!

I'm currently developing a File Browser, it already works for
Port:0: but I'm interested in browsing through the objects found
inside covered ports, all I want to know is:  How can I read the
object addresses from ML for a specific Port?
As far as I know you have to do a Bank-switching to uncover a
module using the instructions CONFIG and UNCNFG, but I'm not really
sure how to do this or the exact address for each module... etc
I will appreciate any help for my Filer  :)

1) ML *can* be entered from the KB. I've actually posted ML
recently here, with instructions on how to compile it using
HP49G facilities which are at least in rom 1.16
2) If by 'threads' you mean 'repliers', I have written and
compiled ML using only my HP49G.
When you talk about threads replying, it seems that you understand
the word less than I. You didn't specify HP48GX, and since I have
an HP49G I tend to assume that in my answers. This newsgroup is
comp.sys.hp48, but it carries traffic on many other calculators and
even less related information. My answers were relevant, and would
be (in a different way) even if I had known what calculator you
were asking about. I would've been less likely to give those
answers, though...
Not proving it? How would I prove it? I gave you reference to
where I describe how I did it, and assert that it is possible.
Any further investigation is up to you. Since I now know that
you are asking about an HP48GX, the following points can be made:
1) I don't think that an assembler comes with the HP48GX
2) but you can probably hack it with a SYSEVAL to change
the types of objects, if such an entry exists.
3) but this would probably involve you writing an assembler
to produce hex strings from HP mnemonics, that uses the
hypothetical SYSEVAL
4) and anyway, with a little effort you can get a nice
assembler from hpcalc.org to do this for you. I know of
JAZZ and HP-ASM.
If you would learn to ask your questions in a slightly better
(more information, more specificity, more clarity) manner, you
would probably get better answers quicker and have to expend
less effort on insulting people who misunderstand you.

real poor ... Real Advanced Math Software for PocketPC is needed, All
we need is a software with:
- Math editor to take notes with special Math Software Input Pannel
and EquationWriter built in.
- Computer Algebra System (C.A.S.) for PocketPC, to do every calculus
and algebra needed. It should copy/paste between the Math Editor and
it.
- Progammable engine to develop little apps using C.A.S , the same
way we do with our calcs now.

Well, just so you know, the keys on my 49G are pretty easy to press.
It's been a while since I had my 48G, but a 48GX I played with in a
store had keys much harder to deal with. This might be a single
case with the display 48GX, but I hope that my 49G isn't unique.
I don't know when it was bought -- my father sent it to me a year
ago after some use of his own.

For example, I tend to keep my sources in a way that many little
programs are kept in a single file. regular expressions could be used
to extract parts of the buffer for compilation.
Removing whitespace from strings.
Removing font/style information from a string.
etc etc etc.

The only crashes I have had so far have been extreme enough to make
any information held in STARTUP somewhat superfluous =) That's a
good idea though; I'm still concentrating on the idea that I *will not*
make a mistake in ML. High caution.

the result itself is wrong (because the estimate I made is far off), and

As a former student and current professional, your comments
sadden me. If you know that both the way [you] did it must be
basically right and that the result is wrong, then that should
tell you to check your work. Either your estimate was off, or
your final answer. If your estimate was off, you didn't
understand the problem. If your answer was off, you fat-fingered
the calculator. As a professional, it will be your duty to resolve
the situation. As a student, if you have two minutes left, you
have to make a command decision. Now, if this is really a
college-level test, there's almost certainly partial credit. If
your professor is Ed McBride, you don't want to trash that credit
because you flaked hitting buttons. So, you cross out your final
answer and run through the steps again, and when you find the
error, make a note to that effect in the margin.
Maybe you'll have a jerk for a professor. But if it were me
grading your test, I'd be more impressed with your work ethic
than if you'd gotten the problem perfectly right.
If you're going into civil engineering, you will literally hold
the lives of thousands in your hands. There's a *lot* more at
stake than a test score.

OK you convinced me. That would be one good solution.
For the actual work (as opposed to school), I completely agree. And if
you really hold other's lives in your hand, you should check your
calculations a hundred times. At least =)

A zint is an integer. Basically a number without a . behind it. These are
used
for exact calculations using the CAS. They are encoded differently that
real
numbers which have a . behind them. When in exact mode these are made when
you
type in a number.

It is integer where answer can have hundreds digits.
For example do: 100!
The answer have over 150digits.
You can now see exactly every digit.
You can now add 1 and the 1 will be added
without any rounding (only in exact mode).
It is not possible in approx. mode.
