D-4 ====This is just a whine, but I wanted to get it off my chest to otherswho know what Iım talking about. I was very happy to snap up a 49G+almost as soon as it was available. But I was dismayed that not everykeystroke registered--I mean, this is an HP calculator, not a toy! Buteven worse, it soon crashed while running a simple program. I use thefollowing program to turn off my calculator, so that when I turn it onagain it tells me how long itıs been since I used it: (RPN mode)ZZZ<< <> TMIT>>TMIT<< TICKS -> x << EVAL TICKS x - B->R 8192 / 1_s * DUP 0_d + >After executing ZZZ a few times the calculator wouldnıt wake up, itjust ŝashed when I pushed the ON key and immediately turned offagain. After pushing ON rapidly a few times the display came on, butthe calculator was unresponsive to keystrokes, and the busyannunciator was continually on. Eventually I took out the batteries, and it recovered its sanity, though not its memory.I donıt regard crashing as acceptable behavior in a calculator. Iexchanged it for another 49G+. Same problems: a few ŝaky keys, and iteventually crashed the same way while running ZZZ. So I returned itfor a refund.I donıt expect HP calculators to misbehave. I agree with your assessment.I had the same problems with Win98. Itıs probably a USB problem. Win98 is not a good USB OS. You can get patches from Microsoft. My Win98 installation has been patched. HP has an upgrade to their USB drivers and and connect program available on the net (you probably already know this).I tried to connect in Win98 using both the original and the upgraded USB drivers and Connect program.I got it to connect and ŝash the rom without any problems, however this uses a different protocol (I think). The interactive connection, using the xmodem server on the 49G+, is more problematic. I got it to work several times, almost without rhyme or reason. I havenıt experimented enough yet, but I think the solution may be the order in which you start the calculator server and make the connection. The version of USB driver or program didnıt seem to make any difference. The noise is worst on the lower keyboard. Itıs much less up near the screen. You can eliminate much of the noise if you press the case against the table when pressing a key. I think thereıs some kind of loose wire or other very light object that buzzes slightly against the case. Maybe itıs the keyplate? I donıt have the courage to try it, but maybe a little superglue under the faceplate would help. I would dearly love to open this little gem up and see what may be loose. One thing that is missing from the 48G is the optional key template that sets on the faceplate.I like the keyboard. Itıs stiffer than I would like, but Iım so happy to get away from the mushy 49G keys. I spent some time comparing them to my 48G. Theyıre quite similar in terms of quality and positive feel, just stiffer. Theyıre not all black. The upper function keys are slightly translucent. The gold faceplate originally turned me off. I discovered, however, when sitting in bed late at night and trying to operate the calculator, that low light visibility is quite good. The faceplate gives a very good contrast with the keys, and the lettering on the faceplate shows up quite well. Certainly better than the 49G.The case is more rigid than either my 48G or 49G. The older HPs will squeak if you twist the case a little. This case doesnıt make a sound. The weight is much improved. The 49G was too heavy for comfort.I did Ŝnd a couple of new functions. Calls toroutines including the BUSCC command would be mandatory, just like toperform a OUT=C C=IN we already used to call OUTCINRTN in #01EECh(HP48GX) or in #0020F (HP49G).An interpretation of these results would be that the ARM9 emulationcore can be called for precise purpose with the BUSCC command only byROM-based routines.(the following lines are to try to answer to the frequent request ofaccessing to ARM9 direct programming)Perhaps is there, deeply hidden in the levels of Flash System Rom, aroutine that uses BUSCC to read as ARM9 code the content of (D0) or(D1), but this is *NOT* for sure.Else, I also strongly doubt it is even possible to write a native ARMcode based program on the hp49g+.Note by the way that it is now obvious that without the call to theroutine #3FEF1 using BUSCC, the main makebeep routine is worthless.Perhaps that so is any LC 8xx OUT=C sequence...Anyway, I wasnıt able to get the slighliest beep or tick using theOUT=C command directly.Yoann.====We could have guessed that although the hardware has very muchchanged, the Input/Output RAM of the 49g+ could be the same as the oneon 49G.It appears that a certain number of things have been deeply modiŜed :1. Adjusting the contrast is made writing discrete values that eitherincrement or decrement the contrast, and no longer poke it at thespeciŜed value.2. Controling the InfraRed is not the same, both in RedEye and RS232mode, and trying to use it as previously yields to no IR emission norreception (that was a test with remote controls).3. The clocks have changed too : only the #137h nibble decreases each1/16th second, but the #138h 8-nibble clock is constant and doesnıtchange (or did I miss something) either in show clock mode or not.4. The vertical refreshing of the diplay SEEMS not to be able to betested with #129, that has been proven constant with a recording ofthe #50 Ŝrst nibbles of #100during one second at the frequency of 128 Hz. The new49g+ has serial #CN33308xxx and my own 49g+ is #CN33108xxx. The newone deŜnitely has a much better keyboard than mine did when new. Inthe meantime, the press-down-and-wipe trick has more or less Ŝxed allthe keys that had been giving me problems on mine. The new keyboardis deŜnitely somewhat stiffer to push though, but I canıt be sure ifmine was perhaps also stiffer when new and now has simply gottensofter. Naturally, since I have only tried a grand total of two 49g+calcs, Iım not sure if this experience is typical or at allstatistically signiŜcant... just thought Iıd add my experience forthe record.FYI, I work in a professional photographic equipment store (inVancouver, BC, Canada) that also handles computer equipment:-> www D0T beauphoto D0T com <- (for fear of getting even more spam atwork...)I recently found out that I can get HP calculators through a CanadianHP distributer I deal with. If anyone in Canada, especially on thewest coast, is having a hard time Ŝnding the HP 49g+ in stores, youare welcome to contact me as I can special-order them in and sell themfor $195 CDN (right around $145 US at todays exchange rate). Notethat we normally donıt sell calculators and wonıt be stocking them, but since people in Canada seem to be having a hard time locating the49g+, I thought Iıd mention it here as a possible option for them. Note that I actually bought mine from Samson Cables! :-0Hope that little advertisement wasnıt too inappropriate for thisforum...Anyways, on to the SD card tests. Today, I quickly compared astandard SanDisk 32Mb SD card to a high-speed Lexar 256Mb 32x SD card. What a huge difference! I performed an SD to SD copy in thecalculator using the Filer with roughly a 100Kb object from an SDsubdirectory to the SD root directory. The standard SanDisk card tooka whopping 24 seconds to complete this and the 32x Lexar took onlyabout 3 seconds! Wow - 8 times faster! Too bad Lexar doesnıt makeany cards smaller than 256Mb that are 32x high-speed... I wouldprobably have a hard time using up a card that big!One thing I just thought of though, is... whether the two wereformatted with the same cluster-size. Has anyone tested the effectthat cluster-size has on read/write speeds in the 49g+? If I hearfrom anyone that thinks cluster-size is important, I would be happy toreformat both cards and test again. I borrowed the 32x card fromsomeone and probably wonıt be able to try again for a while though.Mike Mander====> One thing I just thought of though, is... whether the two were> formatted with the same cluster-size. > Has anyone tested the effect that cluster-size has on read/write> speeds in the 49g+? Those two cards have different cluster size. With FAT16 partitions the cluster size is determined by how big thepartition is. For up to 15MB the cluster size is 512 bytes but for a 255MB card thecluster size is 4K. How fast can you read form a card is given by the speed of thetransistors or memory cells used by the card itself. Virgilio====X> one deŜnitely has a much better keyboard than mine did when new. In> the meantime, the press-down-and-wipe trick has more or less Ŝxed all> the keys that had been giving me problems on mine. The new keyboardsounds good - what about the sounds of the keyboard?Well, sound differences were not totally consistent from what Iremember. In general, the new 49g+ had a sharper snap sound fromthe keys and the keys were a little stiffer to push. There were stillsome keys that were louder than others, but not the same ones as on my49g+. I noticed some keys on the new 49g+ actually had a very briefand faint high frequency ring when pressed while sitting on my desk(for lack of a better term) but I am thinking that with a month ofuse, like mine has had, they will perhaps become softer and quieter aswell. One thing I did notice was the following: on my 49g+, when I pressany key in the upper left part of the keyboard, I get a very slightcontrast shimmer on the lower left part of the LCD. It is like thePCB inside ŝexes just enough, from keystroke pressure in that onearea, that it also puts slight pressure on the LCD display causingjust enough distortion to be visible as a shimmer. The new 49g+ doesnot exhibit this effect at all. Maybe the internal heat-stakes thathold the PCB in place on mine have not been melted as well and thereis a slight movement when keys are pressed.> X> Hope that little advertisement wasnıt too inappropriate for this> forum...> Not for those in trouble...Anyways, on to the SD card tests. If I ever have to buy a new SD> it will deŜnately be a Lexar type fast device!Traditionally, for digital camera use, the Lexar cards have been thefastest. However, there are now some extremely fast SanDisk cards aswell (at least CompactFlash cards) but the problem is that SanDiskoften doesnıt advertise changes on their packaging. For example, earlier this year, SanDisk upgraded their Extreme CF cards and madethem much faster, but the packaging didnıt change, so it is anyoneısguess as to how fast any given card is when you go into a store andtake one off the shelf. Lexar has been really good at labeling theirpackages so one knows exactly how fast the cards are.For anyone who doesnıt know, memory card speed ratings (8x, 24x, 32xetc.) are more or less the same as those for CD-ROM drives. A 1x cardwould have an average read/write speed of 150Kb/sec, an 8x card wouldbe 1200Kb/sec, 24x -> 3600Kb/sec and a 32x is 4800Kb/sec. In reality,it is slightly more complicated than that, but that gives you thegeneral idea...Depending on the device the card is installed in, one may not seeequivalent speed improvements though, since with a faster card, thebottleneck may no longer be the card but the device. In general, aslow card would be Ŝne for backups and Ŝle transfers on the 49g+ butŜle from the SD card, a faster card could help a lot. I was thinkingof transferring some astronomical databases to my 49g+ (Messier, NGCetc.) and accessing them from the SD card, so I think Iıll have to buya fast Lexar for myself as well. One thing I just thought of though, is... whether the two were> formatted with the same cluster-size. Looking at my pictures (esp.http://www.hpmuseum.org/guest/brogger/hp49gpk8.jpg ) I wonder if thekeys which make the most noise are those which are far away from amounting point on the PCB. If the PCB is acting as a sound board(like in a piano) and amplifying the clicks, then the points where thePCB is least supported should vibrate the most, and be loudest. Iknow my . key is the loudest of all, and it is furthest from a PCBmounting post.If that is the cause, then some non-conductive insulation squeezed inbetween the PCB and the back case should help a lot.I do notice that the arrow keys are different than all the rest, astheyıre mounted on a ŝexible plastic sheet, while the rest arehinged. Maybe the plastic sheet reduces the local click noisesescaping around the keys? Is it related to the IOPAR ? I really do not change> anything. Is someone else having this trouble, or its just because I am learning> how to?The biggest problem is that HP doesnıt give clear instructions on howto get this to work, and I think the USB drivers on the provided CDare buggy (they BSODıed my Windows 2000 laptop on numerous occasions).Ok, for starters, go in and remove the connectivity kit you installedfrom the CD and visit http://www.hp.com/go/calculators/ and downloadthe latest build. Youıll need to do this anyway if you want toupgrade your calculatorıs OS to the most recent version (which yes,you do want to do that eventually). The new build has better USB drivers and, more importantly, accurateinstructions on how to set your calculator into the proper servermode. I was in the same position youıre experiencing until I was toldby the lastest connectivity kit that I didnıt want to hold theright-shift button and then press the right-arrow key (which is theway of the old 49), I wanted to simply right-shift and then rightarrow. The difference is that the former puts the calculator intokermit mode, and the latter puts it into xmodem server mode, which theconnectivity kit wants to see.Once you do that, youıll be in business.HTH====> I assume you put the calculator in server mode? A couple years ago, when I decided that my life wasnıt stressful enough, I decided that Iıd return to school for more education in engineering. Since Iıd used HP RPN calculators then, I wanted to purchase a new one.Despite the tepid reviews of the 49G, I went and purchased one anyway. But the bad screen and the rubber keys requiring cleaning from my dirty Ŝngers at work, and the incessant pauses and crawling speed during calculations and graphing were more than annoying. I also longed for the big ENTER key from days gone-by. Despite the ŝaws, I still would have used the 49G over any offering from TI and it never let me down. When the 49G+ became available, I decided Iıd upgrade despite having the 49G just a couple years and reading the sometimes horrible reviews about the 49G+. Yes, you could say I had been warned.HP49G+ First Impressions~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~This reminds me of my Ŝrst HP calculator vintage 1985 with the gold face and black keys. The keypresses do have a hollow thump to them, and unlike HPıs prior work, the key holes are missing that classy bezel around them. Not what I was expecting, but then again we live in a consumer mass market for electronics and this isnıt any different than some of the cell phones and other devices Iıve seen. Yes, I too still expect that added effort from HP, and canıt understand why a calculator that is far from mass market needs to be produced as such.A couple of the keys have a bad mask on them and while itıs not enough to warrant a return, itıs obvious that in this day and age, the quality control ofŜce reports right to the corporate controller. If anyone from HP reads these things, you could have easily jacked the price-up $50, added the button bezels and a retro-keyboard and I would have lapped it up like a biscuit in gravy. Afterall, Iım of the opinion that the user-interface objects for electronics (like monitors, keyboards and mice) are NOT the place to cut corners. After carefully cutting the packaging for the HP49G+ and removing it and the accessories, I have to say the Ŝrst impression was good until I inserted the batteries per the instructions and stabbed the power ON button. Nothing. Ok, Iıll try again. Nothing. Sheepishly, I had to hunt for a paper clip and give my new toy the Ŝrst of several kicks in the fanny. I inserted the paper clip, carefully found the recessed reset and gave it a push. I ŝipped the calculator over, hit the on button and watched in horror as NOTHING happened. No joy. Ok, this is bad. I pulled the batteries out, waited 10 minutes, inserted them again, did a pre-emptive reset and lo-and-behold, it sprang to life.I was at home setting the contrast and doing some preliminary set-ups. After all, this is pretty much a 49G. I entered some functions and felt the quick transformation of disappointment to moderate approval as this thing whipped through solutions and graphing with noticeable speed. The buttons, while noisy, still felt better than the rubber keypad of the 49G and did not miss a single input. And while Iım on that subject, letıs be candid here; a button press on the HP49G+ sounds hollow because the darned thing IS hollow. Thereıs a lot of empty space in there and while Iım not in the habit of being anyoneıs apologist, itıs more than tolerable. Iım certain thereıs some QC problems with 49G+ units having chronic keypress issues, but fortunately mine is not one of them. And weıre going to soon Ŝnd out how good the keypad is because the well water in my home is high in hydrogen sulŜde (15 ppm untreated). Even though I chemically treat it and itıs undetectable to the nose, thereıs still some in there and it tests the engineering of all electronic devices.HP49G+ The Bad, the Ugly, the WTF!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~After the initial false-start and disappointments, the calculator did still please and amaze. Oh, and yes, frustrate.Oddly, the button layout is not identical to the 49G. CAT has been moved to right-shift SYMB. EQW, formerly its own primary button, is in the same place but is now right-shift Œ, and EVAL is now a primary button that was formerly right-shift SYMB. Why they did this, I donıt know and in my case, is a touch annoying because of the way I used my 49G. Is it a major issue? No, just a little strange. The biggest disappointment sits squarely with the documentation. The books for the 49G were simply horrible and what you get with the 49G+ isnıt anything to write home about either. To HPıs credit, I havenıt found anything that is incorrect and subsequently leads the user down the primrose path. But like its predecessor, the basic user guide gives a rudimentary foundation. Gone from HP49G days is the advanced (albiet not entirely useful) guide and the actually somewhat useful pocket Even more thankfully there is Google for searches on how to do things that are missing from the manual. Also available is a 10 megabyte PDF of more documentation that is not entirely useless. Itıs also on HPıs web site. In my opinion, it seems to be on the right course to being a decent guide for doing advanced math on the 49G+. Again, if anyone from HP pays attention to these things, please consider what I said above and consider the fact Iıd easily pay an extra $60 for a retro-keyboard, add some anti-thumping mass to the product (for my friends here on the newsgroup) and throw in a set of printed documentation. Remember, a key market for this thing is students and a PDF doesnıt travel all that well unless itıs printed out. And who wants to print out nearly 900 pages? The HP49G had a sliding cover, which many people disliked. Iım usually a non-conformist and ergo, I actually thought the sliding top was pretty cool and liked it. Now you get a very nice leather case with a magnetic clasp. The true value of the magnetic clasp becomes apparent after your second calculator lockup. Itıs a convenient spot to hold the ERD (emergency rescue device) without damaging the leather exterior of the case. The ERD is a paper clip. Yes, my magnetic clasp secures a paper clip quite nicely. Granted, upgrading the Ŝrmware has stopped all the crashes, but as far as the ERD is concerned, Iım not about to leave home without it just yet. And while the leather case is classy, it adds considerably to the dimmensions of the stowed calculator and I canıt Ŝt it securely in my book bag. Of course, being a non-traditional student, I simply canıt use a backpack lest I be accused of having a mid-life crisis or other identity ŝaw. Nope, I need a $200 satchel soft-attache that is functional, attractive and doesnıt scream I wish I were in my 20ıs again like everyone else in here. Truthfully, I do, but I digress and that doesnıt change the fact that I need to Ŝnd something else in which to carry my books and HP49G+.The biggest pain, frustration and WTF moment has been using the connectivity kit. I installed from CD the software onto my Sony Vaio laptop running Windows 2000. There is little installed on the laptop aside from an SSH client and Opera. It is normally exceedingly stable. Yet, the USB driver for the 49G+ caused the poor machine to blue screen at least half a dozen times while trying to talk to the calculator. Unplugging the USB keyboard and mouse solved nothing. When it wasnıt blue screening the laptop, it wasnıt communicating with the HP49G+ either. There were two problems.First, the USB driver shipped on the CD is apparently ŝawed. Second, the instructions given in the connectivity kit from the CD are not exactly clear on how to communicate with the 49G+. The solution is to ignore the CD and download the latest drivers and connectivity software directly from the HP web site. Once installed, I was able to communicate with the calculator and load the much needed Ŝrmware upgrade. As I posted here previoiusly, the proper keystroke to start communications on the 49G+ is right-shift (release it, donıt hold it down) and then right arrow. Thatıll kick it into Xmodem transfer mode.Another source of weirdness has been the calculatorıs refusal to play nice with my older Sandisk SD cards. Absolutely no problem with my newer and larger SD cards used in my camera, but the older 64 megabyte cards that I have and would like to dedicate to the calculator seem to be exceedingly slow or simply will not work. They work in other devices just Ŝne and even though Iıve formatted them in the calculator, they are simply not working. All other cards I have work just spiffy. Realistically, this may or may not be a problem with the calculator.HP49G+ The Reality of the Situation~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~I donıt believe the detractors of the HP49G+ and their claims can be easily dismissed. Itıs obvious that quality control problems exist along with some proŜt-centric design decisions that, as a former company, were out of character for HP.Nevertheless, an upgrade from my HP49G, this calculator is a welcome increase in speed as well as a vastly improved display. The display is larger, has a better aspect ratio, better viewing angles and doesnıt suffer from glare as badly as the 49G. I like it. And compared to the 49G, itıs blisteringly fast. Yes, itıs probably just as fast as a TI now, but then the TI doesnıt do RPN and that seems to be one of the major reasons for buying these darned things.Somewhat assuringly, HP hasnıt completely turned its back on the ŝaws. soon and thereıs improved connectivity software on the web site. Despite the false-starts, frustration and some lacking supporting materials, I like my 49G+ and itıs already serving me well.Plus, it seems to give the correct answers to the math problems presented, which is always helpful.Your mileage may vary.====Why does HP do this? They must know from endless comments that we want the old HP41 keyboardback. How much extra would it cost? The complaints and tepid enthusiasmexpressed here and elsewhere regarding the keyboard must have a biggerimpact on possible sales than it is worth. I would say this to HP. The humaninterface is 75% of the calculator experience, get it wrong and you willnever win the hearts and minds of a new generation of HP calculator owners.I am old enough to have experienced the excitement of the HP35, the HP25,HP41c, the HP86 (at great expense at the time) but somewhere around theHP48, HP started to lose the plot and now it is a dialogue with the deaf.HP - if you canıt excite those of us who have been your fans for over aquarter of a century and want to continue to believe the dream what chancedo you have with the young kids going to college or university today? However, what has set me back is your comment: > The only problem is that you have to be careful> not to have the XOFF or XON signals in the data. This is serious. I sort of assumed that with pacing only activated for SRECV> this wouldnıt be a problem.Well, letıs see. If you have receive pacing enabled but transmit pacingdisabled, then an XOFF or XON in the data stream coming in to thecalculator isnıt a problem. But if you have transmit pacing enabled, then an XOFF or XON coming in to the calculator is treated as a ŝowcontrol signal, not data, and never shows up in the input buffer.Similar considerations would apply to the other device, although I donıtknow of any other devices where transmit and receive pacing can beenabled/disabled separately.Well, I donıt expect that my printers even have the option to dotransmit pacing, but the only thing that they ever transmit are the XOFFand XON signals. And of course it does no good to have receive pacing enabled on onedevice without having transmit pacing enabled on the other device, andvice versa.> If I was using a PIC or other microcontroller I> suppose I could eliminate the Xon and Xoff signals in the data by jumping over> those signals, e.g. add 00000100 to all bytes with a MSB of 1, and make a> software correction later. The only thing that I know of (otherthan CLOSEIO) that closes the I/O port is turning the calculator off, either explicitly or by an auto-off. But whatıs the point of doing aCLOSEIO anyway?I guess that youıre transmitting from the other device in 255-bytechunks with a sufŜcient delay between them that youıre certain that thecalculator will have time to process what itıs received and be ready andwaiting for the next chunk? Well, it might work. Also consider a stopand wait method where the calculator sends back a signal that itısready for more data.-- James====> If you want your project to work with the 49G (and, I guess, the 48gII)> as well as the 48 series, youıll have to Ŝnd a way to do it without> depending on software ŝow control. Rather a shame, isnıt it?But on second thought, it might be possible to implement, more or less, your own XON/XOFF receive pacing on the calculator. Say start out bytransmitting an XOFF, then doing a BUFLEN followed by an SRECV, thentransmitting an XON, followed a short time later by an XOFF. Whetherthis would work would seem to me to be a matter of timing, and woulddepend on the transmission speed, how fast the other device responds tothe signals, and how fast the XOFF could be sent after the XON.And for transmit pacing, check all strings received and anything stillin the input buffer for an XOFF signal before transmitting. If an XOFFis in there, then remove it from the data stream and set a ŝag of somesort for donıt transmit. Then check the remainder of the data for anXON to be removed and clear the ŝag if itıs found. When the inputbuffer is empty, everythingıs been checked for XOFF or XON signals, andthe ŝag is clear, send a small (small being deŜned by thecharacteristics of the other device) chunk and then check the inputbuffer for XOFF and XON signals again before sending the next chunk. And of course if the other device uses some other pair of ŝow controlsignals, youıd have the calculator use them instead of XON and XOFF.I donıt know; it sounds pretty clumsy, but itıs something to thinkabout, and perhaps experiment with.-- James====> Actually, I want to disable the Auto Power Off feature in EMU48http://groups.google.com/groups?&selm=3a6cc698% 40news.swol.de> I suppose it will be the same method as for the real calculator.Nope.
