I don't want complex theories, or turn around to what I have as ds=... above. Along the same line, please write down for me a formula for the area of a rectangle with side lengths w and h that is better than w*h. I really don't like multiplication any more than you apparently like square roots in your formulas. --Lynn === Subject: Re: numerical calculation about curve length the link is for calculating area of definite integral, not for curve length. they are totally different. out that one calculates curve length by integrating. -- He that giveth to the poor lendeth to the Lord, and shall be repaid, said Mrs Fairchild, hastily slipping a shilling into the poor woman's hand. === Subject: Re: numerical calculation about curve length y=f(x). definite integral for area is: |x-right | f(x) dx |x-left two easy formulas are 1. (f(x0)+f(x1))*h/2 2. (f(x0)+4*f(xm)+f(x1))*h/6 where h=(x1-x0), which is small and xm=(x0+x1)/2. but for curve length, things are not so simple: |x-right | sqrt(1+f'(x)^2) dx |x-left so your words: arc lengths are generally expressed as integrals just like areas are. may be incorrect. In my calculation, f(x) is a general term for any possible y=f(x), not a special one. so I have to calculate arc length directly from f(x), rather than to get f'(x) first. If arc length is calculated by summing distances from one point to another - this is very easy. but I am looking for better formula which is similar to second way for area. === Subject: Re: numerical calculation about curve length > y=f(x). definite integral for area is: > |x-right > | f(x) dx > |x-left two easy formulas are > 1. No, he is completely correct. An integral is an integral- finding area is one application of an integral, finding arc length is another. In my calculation, f(x) is a general term for any > possible y=f(x), not a special one. > so I have to calculate arc length directly from f(x), > rather than to get f'(x) first. If arc length is calculated by summing distances from > one point to another - this is very easy. but I am looking for better formula which is similar > to second way for area. The real problem, which you didn't mention at first, appears to be that you don't want to or can't calculate f' from f. That has nothing to do with finding the integral, it just means that you want to use a numerical approximation to f' Since arc length is given by integral of sqrt(1+ f'^2), divide the interval from a to b into n intervals so that deltax= (b-a)/n and use any method you like (Riemann sums, trapezoid rule, Simpson's rule [usually most efficient]) to integrate not f but g(x)= sqrt{1+ [f(x_{n+1}- f(x_n))/deltax]^2}dx. How hard that is to calculate depends upon how hard f(x) is to calculate, just as if you were finding area. === Subject: Re: numerical calculation about curve length I am just wondering what difference is betwwen your conclusion > sqrt{1+ [f(x_{n+1}- f(x_n))/deltax]^2}dx and sqrt(dx^2+dy^2). is your conclusion not going back to distance between the 2 poins (x0,y0) and (x1,y1)? === Subject: Re: Solutions Manuals > Have the following solutions manual for a small transfer fee > henrydia...@gmail.com Zwillinger D. et al - CRC Standard Probability and Statistic Tables > and Formulae (1999) > Wiley Chemical And Engineering Thermodynamics 3Ed Solutions Manual > Wiley - Pozar - Microwave Engineering 3ed - Solutions Manual > Thomas' Calculus, Early Trascendentals 10th ed Instructors Solutions > Manual > Solution To Two-Dimensional Incompressible Navier-Stokes Equations- > Maciej Matyka > Signal Processing and Linear Systems - B P Lathi - Solutions Manual > Schaums Mathematical Handbook of Formulas and Tables > Sams.Windows.Presentation.Foundation.Unleashed.Dec.2006 2 > Rubik - Solucao Do Cubo Magico > Probability Random Variables and Stochastic Processes Solutions > Manual.Papoulis.McGraw Hill.2002 > Proakis J. Of course one would use induction but when you get down to |sin nx + sin x| >what allows us to go to |sin (n+1)x|? Why would you get down to |sin nx + sin x|? The induction hypothesis would be that |sin(kx)| <= k|sin(x)|. And you would want to prove that |sin((k+1)x)| <= (k+1)|sin(x)|. So... when exactly did you get |sin(kx) + sin x|? -- It's not denial. I'm just very selective about what I accept as reality. --- Calvin (Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson) Arturo Magidin magidin-at-member-ams-org === Subject: Re: |sin nx| <= n sin x I know it is an inequality but what allows us to make that statement? |sin nx| + |sin x|>=|sin nx + sin x|>=|sin (n+1)x|? I thought it was because the max value of the sin function was 1 so on the left the max value woud be 2 while on the right the max would be 1. But actually use sin (n+1)x = sin (nx + x) = sin nx cosx + sinx cos nx and realize by the induction hypothesis that |sin nx| <= n sin x so that sin nx cosx + sinx cos nx<=n sinx (max value 1) + sinx (max value 1). Does this make any sense? >Of course one would use induction but when you get down to |sin nx + sin x| >what allows us to go to |sin (n+1)x|? > How would one prove this? >In case you meant |sin(nx)| <= n|sin(x)|, try induction. === Subject: Re: |sin nx| <= n sin x >But actually use sin (n+1)x = sin (nx + x) = >sin nx cosx + sinx cos nx and realize by the induction hypothesis that |sin >nx| <= n sin x so that >sin nx cosx + sinx cos nx<=n sinx (max value 1) + sinx (max value 1). Does >this make any sense? As I pointed out to you in my earlier response, the inequality is false without absolute values. WWW gave you the hint about using induction and you are getting close but you need to use absolute values and write the necessary inequalities properly. --Lynn === Subject: Re: |sin nx| <= n sin x >How would one prove this?
