Let f(x) be the (n-k)- th derivative of p(x), and let b_1, b_2,..., b_k be the zeros of f(x), ordered by b_1 >= b_2 ... >= b_k. Then, the choice of {a_1, a_2, ..., a_m} that minimizes the ratio (b_1 / b_k) is when the a's are all equal, ie, a_1 = a_2=...=a_m. Of course, Gauss-Lucas theorem tels us that the b's are all real and lie between 0 and max{a_1,...,a_m}. I am interested in the ratio of the maximum root (b_1) and the minimum root (b_k) of f(x). I have investigated using several results from Analytical theory of polynomials be Rahman and Schmeisser, but so far has had no success. I'm looking for examples of uses of the symbol which looks like a superimposed prod and coprod (or, more accurately, a product operator whose bottom half is a mirror copy of the top half by a horizontal axis). I'd like to suggest the addition of this character to Unicode/ISO-10646, so the more examples I can find the more convincing the proposal will be. See (or test.png in the same directory) for an example (made up) formula using this symbol. The files biproduct.{pfb,tfm} in the same directory contain a font having the character in question. The typical (only?) use of this symbol is in number theory to denote a restricted product over places of a number field (meaning the elements of the full product which are integral/unramified at all but finitely many places). One example is in (at least certain editions of) Serre's *Galois Cohomology*, in the presentation of the Poitou-Tate sequence (page 118 of at least one edition of the book, but I don't have it presently at hand). Unfortunately, even in this context, it doesn't seem very common: many authors use a prod with a prime or something like this instead. -- David A. I think it puts it in category of fortunate things: we do not need to think whether it deserves inclusion in Unicode or not. What exactly do you mean by proportional here? Since n appears only in n-m, we may as well make a change of variables j = n-m. The sum then factors as sum_m sum_j A_m cos(bj) exp(-a^2 j^2) = (sum_m A_m) (sum_j cos(bj) exp(-a^2 j^2)) where the sums go from -infinity to infinity. Now sum_j=-infty^infty cos(bj) exp(-a^2 j^2) is a Jacobi theta function, namely JacobiTheta3(b/2,exp(-a^2)) in Maple's notation. It is certainly not proportional to a^(-1/2) in the usual mathematical sense. Moreover, a stationary random process can't have a sum that converges almost surely except in the trivial case (all A_m = 0 almost surely).
